We are working with a NYC based Hedge Fund that is looking to bring on a highly analytical and commercially driven Base Metals Researcher/Analyst to join our Commodities Trading Desk. This role will focus on delivering deep, actionable insights into the copper and aluminum markets, supporting trading strategies through fundamental research, supply/demand modeling, and macroeconomic analysis. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of global metals markets, physical and derivatives trading dynamics, and a passion for translating data into trade ideas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth fundamental research on the global copper and aluminum markets, including mining production, smelting/refining capacity, inventories, and demand trends across key sectors.
- Build and maintain detailed supply/demand models, price forecasts, and scenario analyses.
- Monitor and interpret macroeconomic, geopolitical, and industrial trends impacting base metals.
- Collaborate closely with traders to generate and refine trade ideas based on research insights.
- Track and analyze exchange data (LME, SHFE, COMEX), physical market flows, and arbitrage opportunities.
- Develop and present regular research reports, dashboards, and briefings to the trading team.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in base metals research, commodities analysis, or a related field (e.g., at a hedge fund, trading house, consultancy, or mining company).
- Strong understanding of copper and aluminum market fundamentals, including supply chains, logistics, and regional dynamics.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (Python, SQL, or similar) and experience building models from scratch.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to distill complex data into clear, actionable insights.
- Self-starter with a commercial mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative trading environment.
