Surgical technicians play a crucial role in the operating room, collaborating under the supervision of surgeons to facilitate both invasive and non-invasive procedures. They are skilled in maintaining a safe environment and ensuring that all equipment functions properly, thereby prioritizing patient safety. These professionals excel in aseptic techniques and possess a thorough understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools used in these delicate operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Circulating Nurse in preparing for surgeries by ensuring all supplies, instruments, and equipment are readily available and suited to patient needs.
• Maintain a vigilant awareness of safety protocols for patients and equipment; properly handle and identify all specimens.
• Work collaboratively with team members to restock supplies as needed, focusing on fiscal responsibility.
• Prepare the surgical site under the guidance of a registered nurse and assist the surgical team, providing updates to the relief team on procedure status.
• Commit to personal growth through attending in-services, maintaining certification, and staying updated on policies and procedures.
• Emphasize teamwork within the operating room, demonstrating consideration and cooperation.
• Prepare and uphold sterile fields to ensure quality patient care; maintain aseptic technique and alertness to any breaches; assist surgeons and verify counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the Circulating Nurse.
• Implement sterile techniques throughout surgical procedures.

Qualifications
EDUCATION:
A graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or a formal program as defined by the LCCST (hospital-based or military training accepted).
EXPERIENCE:
1-2 years of experience with certification as a surgical technician preferred.
LICENSURE:
Must obtain LCC-ST certification within 1 year of employment if not already certified.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
Proficient understanding of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and surgical instrumentation across procedures. Experience in all aspects of the Perioperative Department, capable of working independently.
PHYSICAL DEMAND:
Standing for 90% of the workday, lifting up to 36 pounds, handling high-stress situations, performing repetitive tasks, fine hand manipulations, and working at elevated positions. Capability to endure skin scrubbing and tolerate varying room temperatures.
