Costco IT is responsible for the technical future of Costco Wholesale, the third largest retailer in the world with wholesale operations in fourteen countries. The Costco GDX Order Management Platform team is looking for a talented individual to design, develop, and maintain the critical services that power Costco’s multi-billion-dollar eCommerce business.

Role - Software Engineers perform development work across the technology stack (front-end and back-end). They should be versatile in how they add value, with the ability to manage projects involving databases, backend services, or front-end applications. They should demonstrate an understanding of emerging technologies to support new solutions and ensure the full technology stack, underlying applications, services, and databases, deliver optimal performance.

The ideal candidate will focus on back-end microservices development in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to make a tangible impact on millions of members globally within a rapidly expanding eCommerce landscape.

Responsibilities

• Identifies high level requirements to support the definition and refinement of a robust testing strategy.
• Supports the Product Owner with the identification and definition of enablers / work items to support the architectural runway of a given product/application.
• Defines the non-functional requirements (e.g., performance, security, resiliency) to support the development of epics and user stories aligned to a value stream.
• Identifies technical dependencies across several product / application teams to support the implementation of new or enhanced functionality.
• Applies principles that promote availability, reusability, interoperability, and security within the design framework for the Order Management Platform’s overall architecture.
• Establishes and maintains engineering best practices to deliver higher quality, scalable solutions.
• Mentors and develops software engineers with guidance and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
• Establishes and maintains coding standards, architectural patterns, and development processes.
• Works cross-functionally to pilot innovative technologies and capabilities that enhance member experience and drive business operational efficiencies.
• Performs development, optimization, and automation activities to support the Order Management platform.
• Uses tests to assist with the detection of software defects early in the development process.
• Defines specifications and documentation across all phases of the product development cycle, from design to implementation.
• Works with the product team on defining the product strategy and roadmap.
• Delivers innovative capabilities that enhance the member experience across digital touchpoints.
• Builds microservice components from the ground up.
• Ensures longevity, scalability, and quality of systems through continuous improvement, documentation, profiling, and performance enhancements.
• Mentors and guides a team of engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
• Estimates, plans, and manages implementation tasks and reports on progress.

Required

• 5+ years of experience with a general-purpose Object-Oriented Language (C# preferred).
• 3+ years of experience in architecting, designing and developing containerized (Docker/Kubernetes) services based on the .Net Core framework.
• 3+ years of experience developing and writing unit tests using NUnit or similar framework.
• 5+ years of experience leading development with engineers in multiple geographical locations and time zones.
• 5+ years of experience building scalable cloud-native architecture.
• 3+ years of experience with CI/CD tools: GitHub, Jenkins.
• 3+ years of experience with REST API development, with emphasis on security and performance.
• 3+ years of experience with microservice-based debugging and performance testing software.
• 4+ years of experience developing within an agile methodology.
• Solid knowledge of relational and NoSQL database application development.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate to technical and business audiences.
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, able to convey product vision and influence stakeholders.
• Ability to work under pressure with a strong sense of urgency.
• Responsible, organized, self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.
• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze potential future issues.
• Able to support off-hours work as required, including weekends and on-call responsibilities on a rotational basis.

Recommended

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience working in a retail ecommerce environment.
• Experience with data modeling and object-oriented design.
• Knowledge of SOX, PII, PCI, CCPA, HIPAA regulations for transactions, security, and confidentiality.
• Experience deploying and configuring Google Cloud Platform resources (e.g., GKE, Pub/Sub, Spanner, BigQuery).
• Experience with distributed relational databases such as Spanner, Postgres, or similar technologies.
• Proficient in Google Workspace applications (Sheets, Docs, Slides, Gmail).
