The Division of Cardiology has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary (12 months), full time Research Scientist Engineer 1 (100% FTE). The Division of Cardiology is a large, complex Division in the Department of Medicine with over 100 faculty, 31 fellows and over 100 professional, classified and hourly employees spread across 6 campuses: UW-Montlake, Harborview Medical Center, UW-Northwest, Edmonds Cardiology Clinic, VA Puget Sound Hospital and UW South Lake Union.

About this Opportunity
Reporting to the of the PI/Lab Manager, the Research Scientist will be primarily responsible for planning, carrying out, analyzing, and interpreting experiments that investigate the role of sarcomeric variants in genetic cardiomyopathies
Purpose of Research Project
The purpose of this project is to classify genetic cardiomyopathies into subsets based on variant biophysical/molecular phenotype and to identify the best therapeutic target for each group. This position will provide training to other members of the lab in key techniques to achieve the above goals. In addition, the position provides data analysis and figure generation of existing data for presentation and publication of papers and abstracts.
Key Responsibilities
Lab Experiments: 70%
· Management of mouse colony and genotyping
· Making mechanical measurements of cells and tissue from mice in presence or absence of small molecule sarcomere modulators
· Generating recombinant proteins carrying mutations in cardiac troponin complex and assessing in vitro function using techniques developed in PI’s lab
· The Research Scientist will assist other research personnel in the laboratory with their experiments, including but not limited to the tasks listed above.
Data and Presentations: 20%
· Producing publication-quality figures and data tables, illustrating key scientific results.
· Plan and prepare results of experiments for presentation at group laboratory meetings and with the PI
· Record experimental plans, methods and results in laboratory notebooks
Lab Maintenance: 10%
· Assist with maintaining equipment, and laboratory maintenance.
Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Bioscience or a related field and one year of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications
· Comfort with handling animal and animal tissue
· Familiarity with stem cell culture and cardiomyocyte differentiation and making mechanical measurements
· Knowledge of fundamentals of experimental design and molecular biology techniques
· Team player who interacts positively with others working on related projects.
· High standards regarding data quality and interpretation.
· Attention to detail.
· Contributes to maintenance of a safe laboratory environment.
· Curiosity and willingness to read relevant scientific literature.
· Ability to present plans and experimental results to PI and research group in a focused and coherent manner.
· Ability to communicate clearly with other scientists within and outside the research group.
· Ability to accept constructive criticism from manager and others in the research group.
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$51,312.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum:
$58,200.00 annual
