nWork Arrangement:
nHybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to a Metro Detroit location three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.
nThe Role:
nWe are seeking a high-performing Mechanical Design Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of GM electronics design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and review of Electrical Controllers, for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.
nWhat You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

Execute mechanical design of ECUs per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product

Module HW and in some cases SW release will be owned by engineer
n n - n
Design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, electrical interface, PCBA mounts, connector interface and fastening, etc.

Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks
n n - n
Create 3D CAD, 2D CAD & lead CAD reviews with stakeholders
n n - n
Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis

Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to mechanical designs

Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems

Validation documentation and tracking will be the responsibility of the module owner

Assess and aid in selection of semi-conductors to be used in modules assigned

Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on ECU design per development cycles

Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-risk product development

Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers

Drive Mechanical design strategy for the enterprise

Required Qualifications:

Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in:Mechanical Engineering or related degree

Must be graduating between Dec 2025 – June 2026

Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications):

Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter preferred, but not required), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly

Be able to show analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing
n n - n
Hands-on experience engaging with electronics manufacturers.

Mechanical design of PCBAs, computers, or automotive electronic
n n - n
Understanding of thermal solutions and their application
n n - n
Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysis
n n - n
Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancing standards

Compensation: The base salary will be based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.
