The AWS Hardware Engineering team is driving rapid innovation in the server and storage infrastructure used by Amazon Web Services. Our designs are fundamentally changing the data center, providing operational and financial benefits that are critical to the success of the AWS business and its millions of customers. Our Software Engineers solve challenging technology problems, and take big bets on new concepts, enabling AWS services to continue to revolutionize the industry. We are looking for an experienced Software Development Manager to build and own server firmware and embedded software for AWS world scale compute and storage solutions. The ideal candidate for this role will be an innovative, hands-on leader seasoned in building and leading software teams developing infrastructure solutions. As a manager in this team, you will be leading a team of highly motivated software developers that thrives on solving challenging problems with innovative solutions. The team couples software and firmware skill sets with scalable software engineering disciplines to solve real world data center infrastructure problems. You would lead a team building, validating, and operating software solutions in diverse technology domains from embedded software platforms to large-scale distributed software systems in Python, C, and other languages using proprietary and open source technologies and Amazon services alike. You will lead a team responsible for development and operation of embedded software and firmware in the AWS fleet including BIOS, BMC, storage solutions, power and battery systems, and more. You will lead new feature development efforts from concept to launch and beyond. You will establish strategic vision and drive tactical execution in defining and delivering new products and services. This is a fast-paced, intellectually challenging position, and you’ll work with thought leaders in multiple technology areas. AWS Engineers are shaping the way people use computers and designing the future of cloud.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of software developers and engineers that designs, builds, validates, and operates embedded software and firmware across AWS hardware platforms (including BIOS, BMC, storage solutions, power and battery systems, and related areas).
• Own the development and operation of software solutions across diverse technology domains, from embedded platforms to large-scale distributed systems, using Python, C, and other languages with proprietary and open source technologies and Amazon services.
• Drive new feature development from concept through launch and into ongoing lifecycle management.
• Establish strategic vision and drive tactical execution for new products and services.
• Lead and mentor a growing software team in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience
• 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams
• 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
• 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services
• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live site operations
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
• Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Depending on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
