Job Description:

The Pharmacy Technician Specialist works as a system-level pharmacy technician supporting internal process control, medication policy, automation and technology, 340B, licensing and credentialing, and other areas as defined by system pharmacy leadership. The Pharmacy Technician Specialist participates in activities that ensure Intermountain Pharmacy Services are compliant with policies, procedures, laws, and rules associated with specific area's specialty. This position provides a high level of service to facilities and supports programs associated with their role. They also serve as a lead on specific job essentials as assigned. The position supports Pharmacy Services at the highest level and provides guidance and feedback to help facilities maintain perpetual compliance and consistency throughout Intermountain Health.

Position Summary

The Pharmacy Technician Specialist will focus on the accuracy and efficiency of home infusion billing and revenue cycle management. This role requires expertise (or willingness to obtain expertise) in home infusion coding, billing regulations, and payer requirements. The technician will ensure proper charging, resolve billing errors, and support ongoing education and process improvement for the pharmacy team. This position is critical to reducing administrative adjustments, improving revenue capture, and enhancing patient satisfaction through timely and accurate billing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Billing & Charging Accuracy:

  • Apply complex medical billing codes (Per Diem/Kit codes, J-codes, S-codes) across multiple payer benefits (Medicare Parts A, B, D, commercial payers).

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and documentation standards.

  • Maintain and regularly update the charging practice grid based on contract changes and policy updates.

  • Audit billing practices and proactively resolve errors and discrepancies.

  • Collaborate with pharmacy staff to educate and train on current billing policies and procedures.

  • Revenue Cycle Management:

  • Monitor and address administrative adjustments, aiming to reduce error rates and lost revenue.

  • Track and resolve open billing and contracting issues.

  • Support audits and reporting, and error tracking.

  • Liaise with external billing partners and internal teams to ensure alignment and resolution of issues.

  • Process Improvement & Education:

  • Participate in ongoing training which may including NHIA University and other professional development resources.

  • Stay current with industry best practices, reimbursement tips, and published literature.

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of charging guides and educational materials.

  • Patient Experience:

  • Help reduce patient dissatisfaction by ensuring timely and accurate billing.

  • Support resolution of billing issues that impact patient billing timelines.

Essential Functions

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with facility caregivers (pharmacy and non-pharmacy) throughout the system and supports applicable programs. Communicates results of auditing or project-based activities in an open and constructive manner.

  • Acts as a pharmacy technician representative during facility audits, program audits, or pharmacy projects.

  • Maintains thorough knowledge of the subject matter associated with their role (e.g., The Joint Commission or other accreditation standards, 340B regulations, automation and technology standards, and operational policies and procedures).

  • Travels to relevant facilities and participates in assigned activities.

  • Documents observations and corrective action plans and process improvements and provides support for facilities efforts to reach and maintain perpetual compliance, consistency and patient safety.

  • Participates in review and revision of applicable policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures for their specialty.

  • Supports facility and system Pharmacy Services throughout Intermountain Health.

  • Participates in system-level quality improvement activities and seeks a system approach to developing and achieving best practices and processes.

  • Provides expertise, leadership, and support to facility and system caregivers in their specialty area.

  • Practices in a unique, specialized area at the system level as defined by pharmacy leadership.

Qualifications

  • Minimum

  • Licensed to practice pharmacy.

  • Licensed in a state in which Intermountain Health operates or eligibility to obtain a license upon hire.

  • National Pharmacy Technician certification.

  • Experience in a role utilizing mastery of pharmacy technician skills with an emphasis on knowledge of medications used in an inpatient, ambulatory care, or community pharmacy setting.

  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet, e-mail, and scheduling applications.

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Preferred

  • Experience in home health operations

  • Experience in healthcare revenue cycle.

  • Bachelor's Degree. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

  • Experience in an inpatient hospital, ambulatory care, or community pharmacy setting.

  • Completion of 340B University for 340B positions.

  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, URAC, or ACHC accreditation standards.

  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations, and USP for Internal Process Control positions.

  • Knowledge of pharmacy automation systems for automation and technology positions.

  • Knowledge of various state requirements for licensing and credentialing positions.

  • Prior experience with medication policy, outcomes, and formulary management for select positions.

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.

  • Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.

  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.
