Description
The Middle Market Executive Technology Underwriter for Private Equity is responsible for developing, growing and maintaining a profitable book of technology Property & Casualty business focused on private equity‑sponsored and PE‑backed technology companies inclusive of portfolio programs. This includes marketing, underwriting decision making, building mutually beneficial agent/broker and sponsor relationships, establishing a market‑facing leadership presence in the PE community, and applying underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources. The role also guides and mentors less experienced underwriters in PE‑specific underwriting, including regular employee coaching with feedback to the manager on progress.
Responsibilities
- Risk Selection: Review, rate, underwrite and evaluate PE‑sponsored technology accounts by qualifying sponsor and portfolio company risk profiles, understanding deal structure (buyouts, add‑ons, recapitalizations), leverage and transaction timing.
- Assess sponsor track record, portfolio management practices, common risk concentrations, post‑acquisition integration risk and exit strategies when determining insurability, premium, terms and conditions.
- Obtain necessary approvals and create/present tailored proposals that reflect PE deal dynamics. Negotiate and structure deals with awareness of sponsor priorities and industry M&A cycles to secure profitable, long‑term placements.
- Agent/Broker/Sponsor Relationships: Demonstrate high responsiveness to Agents, Brokers and Private Equity deal teams; build trusted relationships with sponsor investment and portfolio management teams as well as placement brokers. Provide PE‑relevant underwriting guidance, participate in deal calls and diligence processes, perform site visits of portfolio companies and attend board or sponsor meetings as appropriate.
- Develop a strong personal brand in the PE ecosystem to build and maintain a long‑term, quality pipeline of PE‑sponsored opportunities and cross‑selling channels.
- Portfolio Management (PE Portfolio Stewardship): Manage a sizable and complex book of PE‑backed technology business by analyzing portfolio composition by sponsor, sector, geographic and coverage concentration. Identify opportunities to improve growth, profit and diversification across sponsor relationships and execute targeted marketing plans to increase market share within the PE channel. Monitor transaction activity and adjust underwriting strategy, pricing, and coverage terms to reflect evolving risk.
- Documenting The Deal (PE Diligence And Auditability): Document files to reflect thorough PE‑centric thought processes and decision making, including sponsor due diligence results, transaction documents reviewed, special endorsements required for deal timing, and any contingent exposures. Ensure comprehensive account reviews, sign‑offs and referrals comply with state regulations, letters of authority and underwriting guidelines while preserving a clear audit trail for sponsor and broker inquiries.
- Leadership And Knowledge Transfer: Formally guide, mentor and coach underwriters and account analysts in PE‑specific technical and professional skills. Serve as an internal resource on PE deal dynamics and regularly update colleagues on PE market trends, major sponsor activity and lessons learned from claims or loss events involving PE‑backed companies.
- Continuous Improvement: Participate in continuous improvement by generating suggestions and solving problems related to underwriting tools, submission workflows and PE deal intake processes. Help refine underwriting guidelines, appetite statements and submission templates to better support efficient evaluation and placement of PE‑sponsored technology accounts.
