This is a unique opportunity to shape and grow a comprehensive grateful patient program that supports groundbreaking clinical care and research.

The Executive Director of Development, Medicine, Surgery, Clinical Care reports to the Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving. This position leads the Medicine, Surgery, Clinical Care grateful patient fundraising team and is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the fundraising program for multiple departments, centers, and institutes, including the Departments of Medicine, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Head and Neck Surgery and Communication Sciences, Dermatology, Orthopedic Surgery, and the following centers, institutes, and programs: Duke Heart Center, Duke Transplant Center, Duke Molecular Physiology Institute, and the Duke Eye Center.

Work Arrangement Hybrid (On-site visitations are required)

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $89,877.00 to USD $179,754.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Department Preferred Requirements/Skills:

  • Proven success in securing six-figure+ gifts.
  • Fundraising experience in the fields of health sciences and academic health system.
  • Understanding of complexities and sensitivities of grateful patient fundraising.
  • Experience successfully managing a development team.
  • Experience with staffing and mentoring organizational leadership and faculty leaders/physician partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment.
  • Experience building upon an existing development program, including individual and institutional philanthropy, resulting in a transformative increase in philanthropic revenue for an organization.
  • Must be a teambuilder who takes a non-hierarchical approach to organization and who is willing to empower and motivate staff while providing the support and advocacy they need.
  • A proven track record of success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts of at least six figures from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be a self-starter with a sense of urgency, a clear set of priorities, and the ability to adapt to and lead through changing circumstances in an environment where working across boundaries and leveraging strengths are necessary.
  • Must-have creative approach to problem solving, and strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, a calming influence, and credibility, sound judgment, and capacity to engage, inspire, and persuade faculty, administrators, volunteers, donors, prospects, and staff, both within Duke Health and beyond.
  • The intellectual depth, sophistication, maturity, professional credibility, and collaboration skills to garner the trust and confidence of senior leaders, faculty, volunteers, development staff, and other constituents.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and its requirements for development activities; discretion and confidentiality for donor and prospect information.
  • Occasional travel and flexibility in work hours is necessary at times to accomplish objectives and satisfy goals.

Minimum Qualification:

Education/Training - Bachelor's degree required, Master's or advanced degree preferred.

Experience - Must have ten or more years of progressive responsibility in fund-raising. Requires a proven track record of leading successful fund-raising programs. Requires demonstrated skill as an effective communicator and writer.

Academic medicine and campaign experience preferred. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Program Leadership:

  • Foster and reinforce a sophisticated and multi-disciplinary mindset for the Medicine, Surgery, Clinical Care team that is aligned with Duke Health leadership's priorities and responsive to donors' interests.
  • Provide strategic management and direction to the above development programs and coordinate these efforts with the Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs office.
  • Serve as the lead contact and staff the Division Chief of Cardiology and co-director of the Heart Center.
  • Lead efforts to strengthen and expand physician and faculty engagement and create effective partnerships between senior leaders, physicians/researchers/faculty members and development staff in above areas to leverage philanthropic opportunities.
  • Partner with the Senior Executive Director of Volunteer and Constituency Engagement and related gift officers to provide strategic leadership for Medicine Surgery and Clinical Care Volunteer Leadership Councils.
  • Work with direct fundraising reports to devise and implement strategies to increase gift potential by crafting plans to maximize fundraising results across their programs.
  • Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs.

Staff Management:

  • Manage and serve as a resource, role model, and coach to a high-performing team for matters of prospect strategy and solicitation; regularly sharing new approaches and techniques.
  • Supervise the work of direct frontline fundraising reports assigned to fundraise and staff chairs, chiefs, and faculty of departments, divisions, center, institutes, and programs of the above areas.
  • Inspire, empower, and motivate staff through active communication and delegation, placing staff members' work within the context of Duke Health's strategic priorities and mission.
  • Develop annual fundraising goals for individuals on the Medicine, Surgery, Clinical Care team, in consultation with the Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving.
  • Develop, evaluate and refine plans and timetables for departmental or theme assignments; assist in planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs.

Fundraising:

  • Successfully maintain and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit major gifts prospects; recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for individual prospects, working in coordination with administration, faculty, and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Assist administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of departmental funding needs; keep abreast of the priorities and aspirations of Duke Health; be able to articulate funding opportunities, Duke Health's mission, and milestones in clear and compelling terms to a broad array of constituencies.
  • Secure gifts in support of evergreen and institutional funding priorities as established by Duke Health leadership.
  • Build partnerships and establish and maintain regular communication with faculty to increase the level of faculty referrals of grateful patients to enhance development activities.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues across the institution to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors.
  • Coordinate appropriate recognition and stewardship activities for donors. Write or assist in drafting proposals and other materials as necessary; assist with publicity arrangements on important gifts, programs, accomplishments or events.
  • Follow procedures in coordination with the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgement and follow-up on all private gifts to assigned areas.
  • Develop contact reports and enter moves and data into tracking databases. Operate within a standardized metric program.
