Director, Center for Multicultural Affairs
The Director of the Center for Multicultural Affairs provides leadership for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs and policies that promote social justice, civic engagement, and community development. The Director will foster an inclusive student community. They oversee the operations as well as educational, social, and cultural initiatives of the Center for Multicultural Affairs. The Director engages in activities that educate the community at large about issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Key Position Duties:
Strategic Planning, Fundraising and Fiscal Management (30%)
- Develop and implement strategic planning activities, including setting annual and long-term programmatic and fundraising goals and objectives for the unit.
- Work in close collaboration with Student Affairs and Duke Alumni Engagement & Development to create and execute the fundraising and stewardship strategies for the Center for Multicultural Affairs.
- Draft, revise, and manage the annual and long-term operating budget for CMA, in collaboration with the Student Affairs financial team. Write budget memos to explain budget issues. Employ strategies to ensure a balanced budget each year.
Program Design and Initiatives (30%)
- Develop, implement, and assess the Center's programs and services to advance strategic and operational objectives.
- Oversee the design, implementation, and assessment of educational activities, events, and programs that support students and promote inclusion and social justice.
- Prepare reports and analyses on trends and findings as needed.
- Provide leadership and direction to initiatives focusing on cultural community.
Supervision and Professional Development (25%)
- Supervise CMA staff that includes full time professionals, graduate students, and undergraduate student employees.
- Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to recruitment, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
University Service and Collaborations (10%)
- Serve as advocate for Asian American, Latinx, Native American, and multi-racial/ethnic students by examining policies, practices and processes and making recommendations for changes to ensure the success of individuals as well as delivery of exemplary programs, activities and services.
- Cultivate relationships and maintain contacts with administrative offices, academic departments, and community organizations as well as with faculty and staff.
- Serve on campus-wide committees related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Other Duties (5%)
- Manage the efficient operations of the Center for Multicultural Affairs
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Anticipated Pay Rate: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $62,000 to USD $102,000. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Minimum Qualifications: Education Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Ethnic and/or Cultural Studies, or other relevant discipline. Experience Minimum of four years of experience in program administration in an academic or counseling setting, or related area with progressive levels of responsibilities.
Preferred Skills and Competencies: Experience in supervision and performance management as well as program development and budget administration. Knowledge of and experience working with diversity and social justice issues. Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to lead in a team environment Outstanding organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects/priorities and meet deadlines Expertise in delivering programs and outreach education to students. Experience in the use of technology for improving the delivery and evaluation of programs and services. Knowledge of appropriate financial practices in a university setting. Demonstrated success in staff recruitment, development and retention. Ability to negotiate and resolve multiple complex problems in a timely manner Strategic planning and basic assessment skills
