The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is seeking a Nurse Practitioner at 50% - 100% FTE to provide overall medical care and provide medical management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided. This role will function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the inpatient NICU population. Extensive focus is caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care on 24/7 basis.
Position Responsibilities:
- Assesses the patient's health status by means of history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and any additional means that are determined to be appropriate, including, but not limited to, performance of the following procedures: PICC line insertion, lumbar puncture.
- Plans and communicates treatment programs relating to the health aspects of the patient's needs.
- Recognizes, discriminates, and manages acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
- Completes medicine documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
- Integrates health information into the diagnoses and treatment plan for each patient and may assist the patient and family in the implementation of the plan in the community.
- Provides an ongoing health education program for patients and their families, utilizing all available media.
- Initiates therapeutic measures using independent judgment according to recognized clinical guidelines.
- Completes MAC, human resource, outreach, and other administrative paperwork.
- Performs other projects as assigned.
- Assumes responsibility for supervisory and administrative activities and special projects as delegated by the Nurse Pracitioner Supervisor/Medical Director.
- Ability to synthesize scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice at the advanced nurse practitioner level.
- Understands nursing theory, pathophysiology, and pharmacokinetics with ability to perform patient and family assessment by means of an appropriately comprehensive history and physical examination, develop differential diagnosis based on history, physical and interpretation of appropriately ordered tests and evaluations, develop a plan of care and implement treatment including referrals and prescriptions, and evaluate patient responses to health, illness and treatment.
- Knowledge of and ability to document/report interventions and patient/family responses.
- Ability to identify patient/family/community care and education needs. Develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the care plan, coordinating care as indicated with referral and consultation resources, community support agencies, schools, and local primary care providers.
- Knowledge of research activities, research findings, and quality improvement principles related to patient outcomes with ability to participate in development and implementation of such activities.
- Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components.
- Ability to perform technical skill defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing, and UIHC standards.
- Ability to function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing, and UIHC standards.

About Neonatology
UI Stead Family Children's Hospital is home to Iowa's only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The nationally recognized Division of Neonatology within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is committed to providing innovative, comprehensive, high-quality care from our team of physicians, advanced registered nurse practitioners, RNs and others that results in the best outcomes for children cared for in the NICU. Each year, approximately 900 babies receive a range of neonatal services in the NICU, which is annually ranked among the top NICUs in the country and has grown to 88 beds with the opening of UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Qualifications
Education Required
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP):
- A master's degree is required. A master's degree in nursing is preferred. If a master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
- A Current RN license from the State of Iowa is required.
- Current certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP - AC or CPNP - PC) and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
- Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components.
- Ability to perform technical skill and function as an independent practitioner defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing, and UIHC standards.
- Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which includes graduation from an accredited PA education program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
- One to three years' experience in the care of sick in the appropriate pediatric or previous experience that demonstrates knowledge of the care of sick pediatric patients is required.
- National certification as NNP, PNP, PNP-AC, or PA (national exam) is required.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated Level III/VI NICU experience
- Demonstrated clinical excellence through published articles and/or clinical presentations
- Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for patients in an inpatient setting.
- Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.
- Demonstrated experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
