Controller - BioTech

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented, and strategic Controller to establish and lead the financial reporting and accounting infrastructure. This is a pivotal role responsible for building scalable systems and processes to support the company’s scientific operations, vendor relationships, and financial transparency.

The ideal candidate has prior biotech or life sciences experience, thrives in fast-paced, high-accountability environments, and can balance tactical execution with operational rigor.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Lead all day-to-day accounting operations including GL, AR/AP, payroll, month-end close, and expense management.
• Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with US GAAP, including footnotes and supporting schedules.
• Establish and maintain internal controls and accounting policies to ensure compliance and integrity.

Audit & Compliance

• Manage annual audits and tax filings with external auditors and consultants.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax and reporting requirements.
• Support grant, NIH, or government funding compliance (if applicable).

Systems & Process Development

• Implement scalable accounting systems and processes to support a growing headcount and R&D investment.
• Drive automation and integration between accounting, payroll, procurement, and budgeting tools.

FP&A and Cross-functional Collaboration

• Partner with CFO on financial planning, cash flow management, and budget variance analysis.
• Collaborate with R&D, clinical, legal, and operations teams to ensure accurate cost allocations and financial support for scientific programs.
• Provide financial insights and support for investor reporting, board materials, and due diligence efforts.

Team Building

• Hire and manage accounting staff or outsourced providers as needed.
• Foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA required.
• 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2+ years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role.
• Prior experience in a biotech, pharma, or life sciences environment (private or public).
• Strong understanding of technical accounting, equity accounting, and R&D cost tracking.
• Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar); experience implementing new systems a plus.
• Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to thrive in a dynamic, unstructured environment.
• Strong communication and leadership skills with a team-oriented mindset.
