Connection Design Engineer
We are seeking a Connection Design Engineer to join a growing team supporting structural steel projects. This individual will play a key role in both pre-award and post-award phases of construction projects by reviewing, managing, and executing structural connection designs. The role involves collaboration with estimating, detailing, project management, and subcontractors to ensure timely and cost-effective design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Award Duties:
- Assist estimating team with review of structural drawings for connection and erectability issues
- Identify potential value engineering opportunities and design challenges
- Provide preliminary connection design and develop sample connection details
- Estimate connection design costs based on tonnage or subcontractor pricing
Post-Award Duties:
- Review contract documents to identify cost-saving opportunities and risks
- Define connection design scope, certification/sealing requirements, and insurance needs
- Coordinate connection design RFIs and develop project-specific connection standards
- Serve as technical liaison between engineering team, subcontractors, and project stakeholders
- Manage internal and outsourced connection designs, including POs and compliance documentation
- Oversee submittals, scheduling, field corrective sketches, and change orders related to connection work
- Provide technical support to in-house drafting and detailing staff
General Duties:
- Develop and maintain standard connection design spreadsheets and sketch libraries
- Support compliance with building codes, AISC standards, and OSHA regulations
- Review software setup (e.g., SDS2) for design accuracy and optimization
- Mentor junior engineers and support development of in-house design capabilities
Required Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Structural Engineering
- Experience with SDS2, RAM Connection, or similar software
- Strong understanding of structural steel connection design
Preferred Experience:
- Familiarity with steel fabrication industry competitors
- Experience reviewing and developing connection details for vertical bracing, moment connections, splices, and custom designs
Additional Details:
- No remote work or travel
- Drug screening required (5-panel)
- Background check not required, but two professional references will be requested
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Location: Winston-Salem/Greensboro, NC
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Salary: Commensurate with experience and education
Schedule: MondayFriday, 7:30 AM 5:00 PM (Overtime expected)
Work Environment: On-site, Business casual (Jeans on Fridays)
