Responsibilities

Under general direction of Sr. Superintendent, plan, organize, direct and coordinate first response to an emergency and/or maintenance calls by electrical staff and Facilities Management Building Operations staff for UC facilities and utilities located at the Main Campus and other sites. Oversee the installation, modification, maintenance and overhaul of electrical systems including power, main incoming building power, motors, variable frequency drives, and electrical aspects of equipment such as autoclaves, sea water life support systems, emergency generators, chillers, boilers, air handlers and heat exchangers. Oversee the installation, modification, maintenance and overhaul of lighting systems (including outdoor, street, and emergency egress lighting) and related components. Prioritize schedules and supervise campus-wide electrical system modifications, repairs and physical reconfiguration. Develop and implement regular security and maintenance schedules and inspections. Coordinate Preventive & Planned Maintenance Program projects performed by assigned staff. Ensure continuity of service with minimal interruptions and outages. Provide guidance to the electrical team to prioritize and plan urgent jobs and scheduled work. May manage systems and procedures to protect departmental assets. Assist in preparation and planning of FM, Electric shop annual budget. Manage costs/expenses to remain in compliance with allocations. Participate in design, creation, and reporting of building maintenance, call center and operational processes. Respond to emergency building repairs and outages, including coordinating utility disruptions that threaten campus operations. Responsible for supervising all building electrical activities and may oversee more complex maintenance projects. Provide direction according to established policies and management guidance.

Qualifications

• Graduation from college with a major in engineering, business administration, architecture or related degree with progressively responsible experience in management of facilities operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Solid knowledge of policies and procedures relative to facilities maintenance, equipment, customer service, dispatch, building maintenance, safety and emergency preparedness. Experience managing and administering a maintenance and repair operation including budgeting; planning; and supervision of skilled trades and facilities professionals.
• Supervisory experience including hiring, promotions, classifications, disciplinary actions, and evaluating performance. Experience following operational and human resources practices.
• Experience in supervising facility maintenance and improvements; building maintenance work including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, electrical maintenance, and custodial. Experience with building and electrical systems related to sea water pumping, piping and storage, chillers, compressed air, HVAC control, chemical treatment programs, utility distribution and planned maintenance.
• Knowledge of higher education, research, and/or health care facilities requirements.
• Experience generating and presenting work status and detailed reports.
• Experience with short and long-range planning for maintenance, repair, and renovation of buildings, systems and equipment.
• Experience monitoring work orders and purchase requisitions.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal and written.
• Ability to handle diverse situations within the University community with professionalism.
• Interpersonal skills including active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, negotiation, mentoring, leadership, problem solving, and quality control.
• Experience in a service-oriented environment with changing priorities, using analytical and problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
• Experience applying engineering fundamentals to building/utility electrical systems and equipment; ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and specifications.
• Experience with software including MS Outlook, Excel, Access, FileMaker Pro, Oracle, Online Timekeeping, Internet Explorer and MAXIMO (CMMS).
• Ability to model UCSD Principles of Community.

Special Conditions

• Must be able to work flexible shifts to manage a 7-day, 24-hour maintenance and surveillance program.
• DOJ, FBI, and DMV background checks and clearances required prior to hire.
• Required to hold a California driver’s license and have a driving record in accordance with local policies; may enroll in California Employer Pull Notice.
• Ability to work in morgues, gross anatomy and pathological laboratories where human/animal bodies may be exposed.
• May be required to work in areas with bio-hazardous materials.

Pay Transparency
Annual Full Pay Range: $97,200 - $182,000 (prorated if appointment percentage < 100%). Hourly: $46.55 - $87.16. Compensation may vary based on experience, skills, and university policies.
