The Missile and Aviation Solutions Division at Leidos is on the lookout for a skilled Avionics Systems Engineering Specialist to become a vital part of our innovative team. The Missile and Aviation Solutions Division excels in utilizing key disciplines such as modeling and simulation, aerodynamics design, guidance and control, software development, integrated vehicle design, and system integration. The Avionics Systems Engineering Specialist will simultaneously support multiple projects across various engineering domains and team settings. Our division features a wide array of programs focused on strike systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and comprehensive modeling & simulation of diverse flight vehicles, both domestic and international. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in steering the design evolution of flight vehicles, covering Systems Engineering, and the design of both Avionics Software and Hardware.

In this role, you will liaise with program management, military personnel, and a dedicated team of engineers from various disciplines, both internally and externally, to implement an agile and efficient development process. A solid grasp of flight system architectures, system interfaces, and performance requirements verification and validation techniques is paramount.

Primary Responsibilities

The Avionics Systems Engineering Specialist will create customized Systems Engineering artifacts that reflect customer needs for DoD product development initiatives. You will work with program management and design engineers to fulfill the Systems Engineering requirements throughout the project lifecycle, including system behavior modeling, architecture definition, interface specification, requirement verification, and the execution of test programs. Tailoring the Systems Engineering approach for each program is essential for the success of this position.

Additionally, this role will involve developing a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) model for specific flight systems. A functional understanding of MBSE models is necessary to effectively participate in these activities. Some projects may require a streamlined Systems Engineering approach to support rapid and agile development methodologies.

The successful candidate must also engage in flight system design activities beyond Systems Engineering. Proficiency in Avionics Software and Hardware design is critical, and a technical background in a related field (e.g., aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering) is essential to advance flight system design and development initiatives.

Specific duties may include leading teams, developing and deriving requirements, designing system and subsystem architectures, interface creation and documentation, test planning, traceability management, and test execution for ground testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and flight testing. Oversight of mechanical and electronics design for flight vehicle avionics subsystems will also be part of your responsibilities, including leading software design efforts.

Basic Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related ABET-accredited degree with 8+ years of experience, or a Master of Science with 6+ years.
• Ability to interpret and align high-level objectives from various stakeholders to formulate a cohesive vision for system design evolution.
• Strong technical expertise in defense systems (or subsystems).
• Familiarity with Systems Engineering-based requirements development, derivation, and test planning, specifically for flight systems.
• Experience with software and/or hardware architecture and interface design.
• Hands-on experience in developing, documenting, and executing test processes and procedures for flight systems is highly recommended.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for effective documentation and collaboration with team members.
• Capacity to thrive in a collaborative engineering environment and work closely with multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively lead a team of engineers.
• Skilled in collaborating with customers, subcontractors, and partner organizations to achieve consensus on high-level design decisions.
• Must be a resident of or willing to relocate to the Huntsville - North Alabama area.
• U.S. citizen with the eligibility to obtain a DoD secret level security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will also possess experience and/or knowledge in:

• Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) modeling tools.
• Requirements database tools.
• Understanding flight systems and flight principles.
• Creating design artifacts, facilitating or leading design reviews, and supporting production and testing of flight systems.
• Testing flight system components, subsystems, systems, and associated test equipment, including sensor instrumentation and data links.
• Hardware-in-the-loop integration, testing, and test planning in a real-time environment.
• Familiarity with software development, integration, and test processes, along with requirements development and verification (experience in modeling and simulation is a plus).
• Preference will be given to candidates with 7-10 years of relevant experience.
• Active DoD secret level security clearance is a plus.

Pay Range: Pay Range $104,650.00 - $189,175.00
