Reporting to the Chief Well-Being Officer & Associate Dean for Well-Being, with dotted line reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Associate Director for Well-being & Support (Associate Director) promotes the integration of psychological and emotional well-being of staff and providers into all aspects of patient and family centered care at Harborview Medical Center (HMC).
Position Purpose
In this role the Associate Director:
- Provides strategic oversight for the Peer Support and the resiliency programs.
- Implements and manages daily operations of HMC’s resiliency and well-being program, which extends across the hospital campus and clinics and impacts all staff and faculty.
- Manages and leads the Peer Support program for HMC which is available to all staff and faculty. This position collaborates and partners with system level staff requests as able and covers other site coordinators of peer support for leaves/vacations.
- Strategically plans and implements staff well-being interventions, including but not limited to providing education at local and system level, debriefs, and support sessions, curated resources, and coordinating pet therapy plans. Oversee various offerings and programs in place at HMC to support employees and faculty who have experienced an adverse patient event, burnout, compassion fatigue, or other difficult life and work events.
- Coordinates efforts to create a comprehensive, systematic, principled, and evidence-based program that ensures access to employees and faculty in need of support.
- Partners with internal and external resources, local and system wide, such as Employee Assistance Program, Employee Mental Health Support Program, the Whole U, Ethics Consultants, Center for Clinical Excellence, Professional Development, and the School of Medicine (SoM) to maximize staff and provider support.
- This position closely collaborates with clinical and administrative leaders, managers, and other organizational front-line staff to understand their support needs and plan short- and long-term interventions.
Position Complexities
The Associate Director:
- Champions reduction of mental health stigma and ensures barriers to access for mental health support are strategically addressed and minimized.
- Works closely with other care professionals locally and system wide to maximize the resources dedicated to staff care, including the Whole U, Employee Assistance Program, Peer Support networks, Office of Health Care Equity, UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and our internal departments such as Professional Development, Engagement, Spiritual Care and Well-Being, Social Work, Palliative Care.
- Discerns gaps in staff support and plans, implements, and supports innovative and evidence-based well-being programs.
- Negotiates with nursing, physician and ancillary program leaders including directors, the CMO and CNOs to gain resources and approval for new programs, or changes to existing programs.
- Represents HMC in UW System level well-being meetings.
- Partners closely with UW Work Life, UW Safe Campus, UW Resilience Lab, UW School of Medicine Well-being and Support and system wide well-being programs and leaders, Center for Clinical Excellence, HMC Ethics Consultants, and UW Advancement.
- Supports teams in crisis: prevention, intervention, and recovery.
- Provides leadership development and consultation, as well at unit or team support.
- Creates multiple campus educational or support workshops, based on identified need, including needs assessment and supports system wide education and support education and support.
- Maintains curated resources, website, and ongoing data collection and executive reports for the Resiliency.
- Represents UW Medicine in community and national education and research related to retention, staff stabilization, well-being, and support best practices through collaboration with local and national professional organizations and systems.
Position Dimensions and Impact
The Associate Director is a critical position in our effort to retain staff while protecting and supporting the mental health and safety of staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development and Management: 40%
- Direct and manage Well-being and Support program operations and development.
- Chair HMC Resiliency Committee, which reports to both Medical and Patient Care Services Executive Leadership.
- Manages the recruitment and participation of the diverse membership of the Resiliency Committee, the well-being focused group of employees for HMC. As chair of the committee, the Associate Director for Well-Being and Support will work to align the HMC Resiliency Programming strategic goals with the broader UW Medicine Well-Being strategic plan. Maintains curated resources, website, and ongoing data collection and executive reports for the Resiliency Program.
- Develops and implements marketing for the Resiliency Program and associated program and offerings, including virtual and in-person information sessions.
- Partner closely with HMC Faculty and Trainee lead for Well-being and Support.
- Partner with other leaders on shared bodies of work such as Healthy Work Environment Initiatives, Leadership Support and Development, Recognition and Retention, and ad hoc.
- Discerns gaps in staff support and plans, implements, and supports innovative and evidence-based well-being programs.
- Provide well-being and support referral sources as needed; coordinate and connect people with resources.
- Triage all requests and consultations for individual or team support by assessing need, and determining best mode of intervention, choosing from: Peer Support by trained peer network; Employee Assistance; key staff contacts (i.e., Palliative Care Social Work, Spiritual Care); Other resources (i.e. Ethics Consultants, Center for Clinical Excellence.)
- Partner with clinical and subject matter experts in staff and provider care to maximize use of resources.
- Works closely with other care professionals locally to maximize the resources dedicated to staff care, including the Whole U, Employee Assistance Program, Peer Support networks, UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and our internal departments such as Professional Development, Engagement, Spiritual Care and Well-Being, Social Work, and Palliative Care.
- Supports teams in crisis: prevention, intervention, and recovery. Leads the Critical Incidence Debrief Team at HMC
- Provides leadership development and consultation, as well at unit or team support at education days, staff meetings and ad hoc.
- Creates educational or support workshops, based on identified need, including needs assessment and provides well-being and support educational content at New Employee Orientation, Nursing Central Orientation, Charge Nurse Workshop, Palliative Care and End of Life Workshop, Peer Supporter Training, Stress First Aid Training, Community of Support Sessions and ad hoc.
- Represents UW Medicine in community and national education and research related to retention, staff stabilization, well-being, and support best practices through collaboration with local and national professional organizations.
System Level Leadership: 40%
- Partners with other professionals, system wide, to maximize the resources dedicated to staff and provider care, including the Whole U, Employee Assistance Program, Peer Support networks, UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and more.
- Represents HMC at system level meetings including UWM Peer to Peer Steering Committee, UWM Well-being and Support Steering Committee, UWM Well-being Practitioners Steering Committee.
- Support and assists in direction and implementation of system wide education and support offerings and workshops. Works with system level leaders to implement and act on the Well-Being Survey
- Represents HMC at system level for ongoing UWM Critical Incident Stress Management Team and Operations and operationalizes this work at both HMC campuses.
Quality Assurance: 20%
- Maintains evidence based curated resources and website.
- Responsible for ongoing Resiliency Programmatic data collection and executive reports.
- Ensure that quality services are provided by the Resiliency Program partners including decreasing barriers to access.
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s degree in social work, nursing or psychology, PLUS SW Advanced License, SW Ind Clinical Licensure, RN, Chaplain or Mental Health Counselor.
- Five or more years of clinical experience in program or project coordination/management including but not limited to curating and implementation of program/project.
- Experience in assessing and assisting people experiencing compassion, fatigue, moral distress, caregiver burnout, etc., especially in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to assess for degree of psychosocial stress and level of urgency for intervention.
Equivalent education and/or experience will be considered
