Overview

The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of 57 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. It is a collaborative partnership among UC San Diego, SDSU, the La Jolla Institute of Immunology (LJI), UC San Diego Health Oncology Network, and the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Engineering, Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences. The MCC seeks an Associate Director for Administration and Strategic Partnerships (ADA) to lead across MCC activities and help launch the next era of impact.

The ADA is the senior administrative executive who oversees research activities across the MCC Consortium, manages the CCSG grant, and partners with MCC leadership to advance strategic plans, affiliations with industry, and community engagement. The ideal candidate is a creative, dynamic leader who can inspire collaboration in a complex academic health system.

Key Responsibilities

The ADA is responsible for financial and administrative leadership for MCC activities, including CCSG oversight, strategic affiliations with industry partners, and collaboration with the MCC Director to execute the MCC strategic plan. Responsibilities include strategic planning, administration, and fiscal management to support research, education, and patient care.

Strategic Planning

  • Partner with MCC Director and senior leadership to execute, refine and evaluate the MCC strategic plan.
  • Oversee activities of MCC consortium partners to maintain strategic alignment and optimize synergies among UCSD, SDSU, and LJI.
  • Oversee current and facilitate new strategic affiliations with drug development and industry partners.
  • Partner with MCC Director to plan philanthropic, community outreach, government relations and public relations efforts.
  • Collaborate with HS and SOM leaders to advance MCC toward national academic and clinical eminence in cancer research, care, education and community engagement.

Administration

  • Direct, plan and manage MCC business affairs, including human resources, operations, finances, budget, Clinical Trials Office, and overall administrative structure.
  • Develop organizational structure, job roles, recruitment, compensation, and staff development to attract and retain talent.
  • Coordinate with MCC leadership to integrate MCC research with clinical enterprise.
  • Lead IT priority setting to advance administrative and scientific goals; oversee space allocation in the freestanding MCC facility.
  • Manage External Advisory Board visits and leadership/scientific retreats.

Fiscal Management

  • Oversee MCC financials including CCSG, institutional, and philanthropic funds; monitor expenditures and forecasts.
  • Prepare MCC budget reports for the Director and UCSD Health as needed.

Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG)

  • Oversee CCSG administration, including multiple programs and Shared Resources; serve as primary contact to NCI and other cancer centers for CCSG communications.
  • Manage CCSG annual progress reports, renewals, and end-of-cycle final reports; implement data tracking for CCSG information.
  • Ensure Shared Resources provide value-added services and access to new technologies to benefit members and cancer-focused research.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Masters degree in Health Services, Hospital or Business Administration, a science-related field, plus eight years of relevant experience including CCSG leadership experience; or 12 years of combined relevant experience, education and training.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills to foster teamwork and collaboration; ability to influence across a complex, multi-site environment.
  • Advanced strategic planning, financial analysis, budgeting, and internal control knowledge.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including grant writing capabilities.
  • Ability to engage and motivate a diverse senior professional team and provide mentorship and direction to achieve strategic goals.
  • Demonstrated managerial and business acumen with experience in academic health systems and cancer centers.
  • Ability to identify and develop future leaders and resolve complex problems; ability to operate with ambiguity to create effective solutions.
  • Experience driving operational excellence through data metrics and governance models.
  • Knowledge of grants administration, research administration, and laws/regulations relevant to academic health centers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five or more years of progressive leadership experience in cancer research administration.
  • Leadership experience within a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, including CCSG leadership.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

Pay Transparency Act: Annual Full Pay Range: $168,800 - $341,200 (prorated if appointment <100%). Hourly range: $80.84 - $163.41. Salary is dependent on experience and organizational needs.

If employed by the University of California, you will be required to comply with vaccination policies. Some roles may require hands-on life-support certifications and in-person assessments where applicable.
