Welding Engineer - Job Description
The Welding Engineer is responsible for supporting and advancing all welding-related activities, particularly in the repair of complex castings made from challenging materials such as cobalt, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys. This role requires a high level of welding expertise, engineering knowledge, and hands-on experience with advanced manufacturing technologies. The engineer will serve as a technical leader and subject matter expert (SME), guiding welding operations and collaborating closely with engineering, quality, and production teams.
Key Responsibilities:
This position involves the preparation and review of welding processes, instructions, standards, and specifications for intricate castings that demand exceptional precision and skill. The Welding Engineer will lead and manage complex projects, taking ownership of initiatives focused on improving manufacturing processes and overall efficiency.
Collaboration with engineering and quality teams is essential to ensure adherence to welding best practices and compliance with ISO and AS9100 standards. The engineer will also play a key role in certifying and recertifying repair welders, providing technical direction as needed.
An important part of this role includes troubleshooting and analyzing failures or interruptions in the welding process. This involves applying advanced inspection methods such as X-Ray and Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) to detect internal weld defects.
The Welding Engineer will identify and implement new or enhanced manufacturing technologies and processes to improve cost-effectiveness, quality, and ergonomics within the facility. This includes recommending and installing equipment upgrades, as well as refining welding techniques and inspection processes.
Mentorship is a key aspect of the position. The engineer will support and guide junior staff, operators, and less experienced technical personnel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning. As the welding subject matter expert, the engineer will also help bridge the gap between strategic goals and day-to-day operations.
Cross-functional collaboration is expected, including leading or participating in interdisciplinary projects requiring input from various departments. The role also involves evaluating engineering changes, contributing to product design improvements, and enhancing corporate business processes and work instructions.
The Welding Engineer will interact directly with customer technical teams, providing manufacturing documentation and securing approvals as needed to qualify the company as a production source. They will lead or assist in problem-solving activities related to weld repair and quality assurance, particularly where inspection and testing are involved.
This role requires strong analysis skills to evaluate welding conditions and techniques, and may also involve participating in in-service inspections. The engineer is expected to deliver high-quality results efficiently and reliably in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Responsibilities:
The position may involve training and development of less experienced staff. Strict adherence to company safety, quality, and ethical standards is required. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Material Science, or Metallurgical Engineering is required. Prior experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment, especially with TIG repair welding of aerospace components made from superalloy materials, is preferred.
The ideal candidate should have strong practical knowledge of welding science and its application in fabrication and repair, along with mechanical and robotic aptitude. Familiarity with engineering blueprints and schematics is essential.
This position requires the ability to manage physical tasks, work with urgency and accuracy, and thrive in a dynamic production setting. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and computer literacy-including proficiency in Microsoft Office, modeling software, and statistical tools-are also important.
Compensation: for this role would pay between $100k-$115k with a complete benefit package including health, life, dental and vision insurance and a bonus plus 401k match. Relocation also if you qualify.
Pay Details: $100,000.00 to $115,000.00 per year
