nANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is currently hiring a Patient Care Technician to support our Weekend Program in the Orthopedic Unit at the McCandless location. Employees in the Weekend Program must have at least 6 months of experience and will receive an added 20% differential to their base rate for as long as they meet the Weekend Program requirements .
nThe Patient Care Technician is a valued step in the UPMC Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and patient care experience.
nHours:
nOur Patient Care Technicians in the Weekend Program work two 12-hour rotating shifts between the hours of 3:00PM on Friday and 7:00AM on Monday, a total of 24 hours per weekend, and 48 weekends per year. Any hours worked outside of this are considered extra and will be paid at the employee's base rate. Hours may vary by unit. Nursing students with 1-2 clinical rotations completed or candidates with prior patient care experience are highly preferred and encouraged to apply.
n**Hired candidates will be required to attend Full-Time orientation (classroom-based and unit-based) at the McCandless campus of Passavant for up to two weeks prior to beginning in this role.
nResponsibilities:

- n Suggests and supports changes within the department.nn n
- n Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges.nn n
- n Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.nn n
- n Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.nn n
- n Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (all competencies must be achieved):nn n
o ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients
no Point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, & vital signs
no I&O
no Telemetry monitor application/reapplication
no HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs)
no Clean catch/mini catheter urine collection
no Simple dressings
no 12 lead EKG
no Bladder scan
no All specimen collections

- n Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.nn n
- n Establishes appropriate and effective communication with other departments.nn n
- n Establishes professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.nn n
- n Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.nn n
- n Constructively receives feedback and direction.nn n
- n Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director.nn n
- n Takes action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.nn n
- n Request's assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.nn n
- n Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director.nn n
- n Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team.nn n
- n Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.nn n
- n Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace.nn n
- n Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.nn n
- n Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living.nn n
- n Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.nn n
- n Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes inpatient status.nn n
- n Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.nn n
- n May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.nn n
- n Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.nn n
- n Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.nn n
- n Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.nn n
- n Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner.nn n
- n Completes department clerical functions as needed.nn n

- n High school diploma or equivalent.nn n
- n Must also havenn n
o 1 Year of Experience OR
no enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation OR
no completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field

- n Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician classnn n
- n Successful completion of basic information system training.nn n
- n Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.nn n
- n Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.nn n
Licensure/Certification/Clearances:

- n CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hirenn n
- n Act 34 Criminal Clearancenn n
