Job Summary
Per the standards of the Association of Surgical Technologists, Surgical Technologists work under the direct supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The ST is responsible for ensuring the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The ST handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures, anticipates the surgeon’s needs, and upholds the highest standards of sterile technique. The ST also assists with orientation and training of new employees and students. The ST is not permitted to function in the circulating nurse role, first assistant role, administer medications, or complete patient records.

Responsibilities

• Check supplies and equipment needed for a procedure
• Scrub, gown, and glove self, surgeon, and assistants
• Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to surgery and before incision closure
• Assist in draping the sterile field
• Pass instruments to the surgeon during procedures
• Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique
• Assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room
• Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
• Prep the surgical suite for the next patient
• Assist in training and supporting new employees and students in the Scrub Tech role

Requirements

Education

• Trade or Technical School (Certificate or Diploma required)

Licenses & Certifications

• Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting

Experience

• At least one year of surgical technology experience preferred
