Job Description: Polysomnography Technician

Position Overview: A Polysomnography Technician (also known as a sleep tech) is responsible for conducting diagnostic tests to monitor and evaluate sleep patterns, diagnosing sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and other sleep-related conditions. The technician operates specialized equipment to record a variety of physiological parameters during sleep, including brain wave activity, heart rate, eye movement, and muscle activity.

Common Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepare Patients for Sleep Studies:

Explain the procedure to patients and ensure they understand the test.

Prepare and place electrodes on the patient’s body, such as on the scalp, chest, and legs, to record physiological data.

Ensure the comfort and safety of patients during the entire sleep study.

Conduct Sleep Studies:

Set up and operate polysomnographic equipment, including electroencephalogram (EEG) machines, electrocardiogram (ECG) equipment, and oxygen saturation monitors.

Monitor the patient’s condition throughout the night and ensure that the equipment is functioning properly.

Record and document any unusual occurrences or events during the study.

Data Collection and Analysis:

Collect and review data to identify patterns in the patient’s sleep cycle and behavior.

Perform basic analysis and interpretation of data to determine if further evaluation is needed by a physician or specialist.

Reporting:

Prepare reports for physicians, summarizing the data collected and observations made during the sleep study.

Communicate findings to healthcare providers, including notes on abnormal readings or changes in patient behavior.

Equipment Maintenance:

Maintain and calibrate polysomnographic equipment.

Ensure that all equipment is sanitized and in good working order for each patient.

Patient Care:

Monitor patient comfort and resolve any issues that arise during the sleep study.

Provide support and reassurance to patients during the procedure.

Compliance and Safety:

Follow infection control and safety protocols.

Adhere to hospital or clinic policies and guidelines, ensuring HIPAA compliance and confidentiality of patient information.

Certification and Licensing Requirements:

Certification: Many states and employers require Polysomnography Technicians to be certified by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). The most common certification is the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), which demonstrates the technician's ability to perform sleep studies and analyze data competently.

States Requiring Certification or Licensing: While certification is often a requirement for employment, not all states mandate a separate state-issued license for polysomnography technicians. However, some states may have additional licensing requirements or require technicians to maintain specific credentials, such as:

California – Requires polysomnography technicians to be licensed under the California Sleep Disorders and Services Licensing Act.

New York – Requires polysomnography technicians to be certified by the BRPT.

Florida – Requires a state license for sleep technologists, but certification from the BRPT or American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) is also recognized.

North Carolina – Requires certification from the BRPT or equivalent.

Other States: Many other states do not require a specific state license, but employers often require certification from an accredited body such as the BRPT. Technicians may also need to complete continuing education to maintain certification.

Additional Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent; an associate’s degree in a related field (such as respiratory therapy, nursing, or healthcare technology) may be preferred.

Completion of an accredited polysomnography training program.

Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
