Job Summary

Surgical technologists are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. They assist in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care that meets the mission and goals of quality care and service excellence at Sanford. Responsibilities include:

1. Assisting with assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, or documenting the care of patients.
2. Working under the supervision and delegation authority of a surgeon and other licensed professionals to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures.
3. Ensuring that the operating room environment is safe and that equipment functions properly.
4. Maintaining an organized sterile field and accounting for items used during procedures.
5. Preparing the surgical environment before procedures, ensuring that supplies are sterile and ready for surgery.
6. Assisting in the preparation of patients prior to procedures.
7. Conducting quality assurance checks on sterile and unsterile supplies.

Qualifications

Graduate of an approved school of surgical technology or an accredited school of practical nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) required. Experience in an operating room setting is preferred. Must have a good knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical and surgical terminology, instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures acquired through post-secondary training. National certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.

If an LPN, must hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing board and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within the first 60 days of employment. Must complete required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training requirements of the department and facility.
