Our Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is a free-standing surgical facility providing exceptional surgical care to both pediatric and adult patients. We support various services, including Orthopedics (Sports), ENT/OHN, plastics, general laparoscopic, general oncology, pediatric urology, urology, and dental. While the ability to scrub is preferred, it is not a requirement. Candidates with expertise in either sports orthopedics or ENT are highly encouraged to apply.

This full-time position offers a schedule of Monday through Friday, 7am-5:30pm, consisting of 4 ten-hour shifts each week with one rotating day off. Enjoy the benefits of no weekends, no holidays, and no call obligations.

The Surgical Technologist I plays a vital role in facilitating safe and effective surgical procedures under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse. You will help ensure the operating room environment is secure, that equipment is functioning properly, and that patient safety is maximized throughout the surgical process. With expert knowledge in sterile and aseptic techniques, surgical technologists are crucial in supporting surgeons during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Responsibilities include:

1. Executing technical duties across all operating room specialty areas according to accepted standards.
2. Maintaining and ensuring proper sterilization and handling of specialty instrumentation.
3. Adhering to aseptic techniques and proactively addressing contamination risks.
4. Conducting surgical counts and reporting discrepancies immediately.
5. Labeling drugs and solutions while monitoring their usage.
6. Assisting with the proper identification and preparation of surgical specimens.
7. Participating in the planning and organization of instruments and supplies for optimal accessibility.
8. Supporting the surgeon with a solid understanding of anatomy and surgical procedures.
9. Planning for instrument needs during surgical cases.
10. Adapting scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information and communicating with the surgical team effectively.
11. Responding to surgical emergencies in line with hospital-wide emergency management plans.
12. Managing inventory and storage of supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
13. Reporting defective instruments and ensuring operating room readiness.
14. Assisting the registered nurse during the intraoperative phase of nursing practice.
15. Operating complex equipment and troubleshooting as needed.
16. Mentoring Surgical Technician trainees and serving as a preceptor when necessary.

Education Requirements:
No formal education required if other qualifications are met.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification AND either: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology, or individuals with 3+ years of prior surgical tech experience.

Professional Experience Requirements:
0-3 years.

Successful completion of the service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies, strong communication and customer service skills, and excellent organizational and priority-setting abilities.
