Surgical Technician

Summary:

As a Surgical Technician, you will be an essential part of our surgical team, performing a variety of technical duties to support the preparation and care of patients before surgery. You will prepare patient skin, maintain aseptic techniques, and provide empathetic support to pre-operative patients, ensuring their comfort and privacy. Your role will also include transporting patients to and from the Operating Room suite and positioning them based on the type of surgery. You will identify and care for biological specimens while preparing the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies according to the surgical case.

Responsibilities:

• Embrace and meet the expectations outlined in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Under the guidance of a professional nurse, perform all direct patient care processes in the OR before and during surgical procedures.
• Preferably demonstrate proficiency in scrubbing for various specialty areas including Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, and Robotics.
• Establish and maintain a sterile field, pass instruments and sutures, and assist the physician as directed.
• Utilize the physician preference card as a guide when preparing for surgical cases in the OR.
• Keep preference cards updated and as complete as possible.
• Collaborate effectively as a team member dedicated to patient care.
• Cooperate in planning and executing team tasks.
• Ensure a safe surgical environment by consistently applying technical and aseptic practices.
• Exhibit clinical expertise in using and caring for all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Follow Universal Barrier Precautions for safety during all patient interactions.
• Demonstrate competency in managing the surgical environment, including maintaining traffic control and adhering to sanitation policies.
• Familiarize yourself with facility policies concerning the decontamination, processing, and sterilization of instruments and supplies.
• Exhibit competence in performing patient care responsibilities tailored to meet the unique needs of the diverse patient population.
• Adapt assessment and treatment methods to address the individual physical, psychosocial, cultural, and age-specific needs of each patient.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

• A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or an accredited LVN/LPN program is required.

Experience

• Preferred experience: 2 or more years.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

• BLS certification is required.
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or an active LVN/LPN license is required.
