Job Summary:

The Surgical RN First Assistant (RNFA) plays a critical role during the surgical process by assisting under the guidance of the surgeon. This position allows for the unique opportunity to work both as a surgical first assistant and as a Registered Nurse, depending on departmental needs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare the surgical environment and ensure optimal patient positioning, sterilization, and draping for various procedures.
• Assist the surgical team with closing procedures, including skin, subcutaneous, fascia, and peritoneum closures, as well as employing hemostatic techniques.
• Maintain strict aseptic techniques to guarantee a safe and sterile surgical atmosphere.
• Facilitate patient transport and assist with room turnover to enhance service efficiency.
• Serve as a Registered Nurse by circulating cases as needed.
• Act as a mentor and educational resource for patients and team members.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the team and department goals.

Qualifications:

• Completion of a certified surgical first assistant program is required.
• A valid RN License from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state is necessary.
• Certification as a Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) is required.
• AHA BLS Provider CPR certification must be obtained at hire.
• A BSN is preferred; those with an Associate's Degree in Nursing must achieve their BSN within five years of hire (as mandated in March 2014).
• Certification as a Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) is strongly preferred.
