Job Summary:

The Surgical RN First Assistant (RNFA) works closely with surgeons to provide excellent patient care during surgeries. In addition, the RNFA may perform the duties of a Registered Nurse according to departmental needs. This role is pivotal in upholding the mission, vision, values, and strategic goals of Mary Washington Healthcare, emphasizing a commitment to quality service for patients, peers, and medical staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Assist in preparing for surgical procedures, ensuring proper patient positioning, prepping, and draping.
• Support the surgeon in various closure techniques, including skin, subcutaneous, and fascia closures, as well as hemostatic procedures.
• Maintain a safe surgical environment and adhere to aseptic methods during all procedures.
• Participate in patient transport and room turnover to enhance service efficiency.
• Fulfill the duties of a Registered Nurse and circulate during surgeries as necessary.
• Act as an educator and resource for both patients and staff, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Graduation from a surgical first assistant program is essential.
• Current RN License from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state is required.
• Certification as a Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) is necessary.
• AHA BLS Provider CPR certification is required upon hire.
• A BSN is preferred; RNs with an Associate's Degree must obtain a BSN within five years of hire (effective March 2014).
• Certification as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) is preferred.
