Speech Language Pathologist

Evaluates and treats patients requiring speech-language-swallowing therapy. Performs the duties and responsibilities within the scope of a Speech Language Pathologist - Level I.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

• Current Speech-Language Pathologist licensure in the state where services will be provided:
• MD: Speech Language Pathologist License through Maryland Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech-Language Pathologists
• OH: Speech Pathologists License through Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board
• PA: Speech Language Pathologist License through Pennsylvania Board of Examiners in Speech Language and Hearing
• WV: Speech Language Pathologist License through the West Virginia Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology
• Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Language Pathology
• Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

Experience:

• Two (2) years of speech language pathology experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current specialty certification in one of the following:
• Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Certification through Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Global
• PROMPT Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets Certification through PROMPT Institute
• Picture Exchange Communications System Certification through Pyramid Educational Consultants
• Head and Neck Lymphedema Certification through Klose or Lymph-eds
• Language Acquisition through Motor Planning Certification through Center for AAC and Autism
• Neuro-Development Treatment Certification through Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association
• Board Certified Specialist in Fluency Disorders through American Board of Stuttering, Cluttering, and Fluency Disorders (ABSCF)
• Board Certified Specialist in Child Language through American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders (ABCLLD)
• Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders through American Board of Stuttering, Cluttering, and Fluency Disorders (ABSCF)

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides coordinated and comprehensive patient care including assessment, expected outcomes, rehabilitation interventions and evaluation with an interdisciplinary team approach.
• Evaluates speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive-linguistic needs and develops and implements the treatment programs for assigned patients to provide coordinated and comprehensive patient care including assessment, expected outcomes, and rehabilitation interventions within an interdisciplinary team approach.
• Determines/revises priorities for direct/indirect patient care activities based on patient need and available resources. Documents all treatments, according to department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision, by documentation review, and consultation with referring Provider.
• Performs evaluation of patient response to tasks performed and delegated.
• Participates in the Performance Improvement program of the Rehabilitation Services department with emphasis on speech therapy, to assure the delivery of appropriate, timely, and cost-effective services.
• May supervise assigned graduate assistants/interns, students and volunteers. Assigns schedules for students to participate in evaluation and treatment of patients conducted in the clinical setting. Approves graduate student lesson plans, reports, documentation in hospital EMR, or appropriate written communication for assigned patients. Provides feedback to students during supervised sessions. Discusses techniques, goals, and materials to be used in therapy sessions. Provides written evaluation of student performance at the end of the semester.

• Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.

Speech Language Pathologist Clinical Ladder

The Speech Language Pathologist Clinical Ladder is a system-wide clinical advancement program to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality rehab care, and improve job satisfaction for speech pathologists.

To apply for the next level, the speech language pathologist must meet the requirements of their current level. They must also meet the required years of experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level.

• Level 1: No experience required.
• Level 2: Meets requirements for previous level. Two years of experience.
• Level 3: Meets requirements for previous levels. Four years of experience. Twenty Level 3 Proficiencies (if certification is held). Ten Level 3 Proficiencies (if certification is not held). Five Level 3 Proficiencies required annually.
• Level 4: Meets requirements for previous levels. Eight years of experience. Ten Level 4 Proficiencies. Five Level 4 Proficiencies required annually. Professional Certification.
• Level 5: Meets requirements for previous levels. Ten years of experience. Ten Level 5 Proficiencies. Five Level 5 Proficiencies required annually. Professional Certification.
