Senior Surgical Technician - Surgical Services On Call

Our Surgical Services Department includes three operating rooms and one specialized procedure room, serving a variety of specialties such as orthopedics, general surgery, gynecology, robotics, urology, ENT, breast surgery, ophthalmology, and endoscopy. Our skilled staff are cross-trained across all specialties, ensuring that we provide efficient, high-quality care to every patient.

Position Overview: We are looking for an experienced Surgical Technician to become a vital part of our surgical services team. This full-time position offers 36 guaranteed paid hours per week along with structured on-call duties. The Clinical Nurse II will deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative nursing care while working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical staff to ensure optimal outcomes for our patients.

Schedule Commitment:

This is a full-time role requiring 72 hours plus 144 hours of on-call duty per pay period (2 weeks). The schedule will include:

• Week 1: On-call Monday to Thursday (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM) and two scheduled 12-hour day shifts.
• Week 2: On-call Tuesday to Sunday (Tuesday to Friday 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM, Saturday 7:00 AM to Monday 7:00 AM) plus one scheduled 12-hour day shift.

You must be able to report to work within 45 minutes when called in.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Pay for all hours worked, including a minimum of two hours of pay when called in.
• Eligible for shift differentials and overtime as per policy.
• Guaranteed 36 hours of work weekly.
• No call-back pay; no on-call pay for non-working hours.

The Surgical Technologist II operates under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses to ensure the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures. Responsibilities include maintaining a sterile environment, managing surgical instruments, assisting during surgeries, and mentoring new staff.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Perform advanced technical duties across various operating room specialties.
2. Ensure proper maintenance and sterilization of instruments.
3. Follow and uphold aseptic techniques, addressing any contamination issues proactively.
4. Conduct surgical counts and resolve discrepancies as needed.
5. Maintain a sterile field and provide necessary support to the surgical team.
6. Identify and prepare surgical specimens accurately.
7. Assist in planning and organizing instruments and supplies for procedures.
8. Understand patient anatomy relevant to surgical processes.
9. Adapt scrubbing techniques based on situation demands.
10. Inventory and manage supplies under the guidance of leadership.
11. Educate and mentor new hires and peers in order to enhance team performance.
12. Recognize and report any issues with instruments or equipment.
13. Support the registered nurse during the intraoperative phase of care.
14. Contribute to research data collection under RN supervision.
15. Manage the operation of complex surgical equipment and troubleshoot as necessary.

Other Information:

Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; experience may substitute formal training.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers; Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery (TS-C).

Professional Experience Requirements: Minimum of 3 years.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Completeness of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies; strong communication and customer service skills; excellent organizational abilities; capable of mentoring and teamwork; on-call availability may be required.
