Senior Risk Engineer – Onshore Energy and (non-civils) Construction at Liberty Mutual Insurance.

The Senior Risk Engineer provides technical support to Underwriting and Claims teams for assigned lines of business (onshore oil, gas, petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, power and non-civils construction). This role involves planning, organizing, analyzing and evaluating risks, conducting on-site risk engineering surveys, and delivering risk assessments to enable Underwriters to make accurate and profitable underwriting decisions. The role also provides risk analysis for claims mitigation.

Responsibilities

• Plans, organizes, and performs desk-based risk appraisals for assigned lines of business to provide risk analysis information to Underwriters
• Prepare plant/process/product descriptions, assess design, hazards, mitigation measures, management systems/procedures, plant protection facilities, and loss estimate calculations
• Conduct on-site risk engineering surveys for existing and prospective clients as required by underwriters
• Produce either a brief summary report for internal use or a detailed marketing risk engineering survey report for Underwriters, Brokers, or the Client as required by internal guidelines
• Own allocated accounts including participation in surveys, follow-up of key recommendations and ensuring risk engineering information on file is up to date
• Provide technical input on claims including review of loss adjuster reports and site visits to identify mitigation opportunities and lessons learned
• Communicate lessons learned to other Engineers/Underwriters and use them as a basis for future loss prevention investigations during surveys
• Maintain professional credibility and demonstrate technical expertise and sound judgment
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of assigned lines of business, including process technology, loss prevention, construction and related issues that may impact underwriting decisions or profitability
• Actively pursue professional development to maintain knowledge in these areas
• Participate in business development and marketing activities for assigned lines of business
• Focus on assessment of onshore oil, gas, petrochemical and chemical risks, as well as non-civil construction projects; power generation experience is preferred but not mandatory

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in a technical discipline (e.g., Chemical, Process, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering) or equivalent
• At least 7 years’ experience in relevant process industries with background in operations, maintenance, inspection, process engineering, loss prevention, construction, risk management or project management (managerial, technical or consultancy roles)
• Candidates with extensive industry experience in relevant sectors but no insurance experience will be considered
• Strong communication and listening skills to develop and maintain relationships with underwriters, risk engineers, claims teams, Liberty Mutual staff and clients
• Ability to understand and communicate technically related information within Risk Engineering, Underwriting and Claims groups
• Strong research, evaluation, and analysis capabilities
• Marketing skills to participate in new/renewal business development
• Proficiency in MS Office and ability to create/modify documents and complex spreadsheets
• Ability to travel regularly
