A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a healthcare professional who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with respiratory disorders or breathing problems. They play a key role in assisting patients with conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and other lung-related diseases. Respiratory therapists work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers in a variety of clinical settings, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and home care environments.
Respiratory therapists evaluate and treat patients who have difficulty breathing due to various pulmonary conditions. They are trained to perform diagnostic tests, administer therapies (e.g., oxygen, aerosol treatments), manage ventilators, and educate patients and families about respiratory health. RTs work with patients of all ages, from neonates to the elderly, and are involved in critical care situations, such as managing patients on life support systems, as well as in more routine settings like outpatient clinics.
This facility typically employs a range of medical professionals to address the health and safety needs of their occupants. This staff may include physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and other healthcare specialists trained to manage medical emergencies and provide routine care. These professionals are essential for maintaining the well-being of personnel during extended operations in secure environments.
