nThe Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to support studies in the Bornfeldt and Kanter laboratories.
nPOSITION PURPOSE
nThe field of research this position is engaged in is cardiovascular and kidney complications of diabetes. This position engages in laboratory bench research and research using mice.
nThe purpose of the research projects this position supports is to identify new cellular and molecular mechanisms of diabetes-associated cardiovascular disease and kidney disease, so that new strategies for prevention and treatment can be discovered.

nThe Research Scientist/Engineer 1 will support mouse studies performed and conducted in the laboratory of Drs. Karin Bornfeldt and Jenny Kanter at the University of Washington South Lake Union campus.
nDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
nAnimal Work: 65%

Independently handle and monitor mice, including performing various types of injections.

Perform blood collection procedures with minimal supervision.
n n - n
Conduct post-mortem dissections to obtain specific tissues for analysis.
n n - n
Perform genotyping and aid in phenotyping in rodents.
n n - n
Provide support for complex rodent surgical procedures, including preparation, monitoring, and recovery assistance.

Experimental support: 30%

Support the design of specific phases of research and conduct experiments.

Assist in a wide range of bench procedures, including sample preparation and processing.

Applying molecular biology and cellular techniques to investigate the effects of diabetes on the cardiovascular and renal systems.

Dissect tissue for biochemical and histochemical analysis, including downstream image acquisition and data analysis.
n n - n
Contribute to laboratory readiness through preparation and maintenance tasks.
n n - n
Glassware sterilization, preparation of gels and buffers, and maintaining supplies in the surgical suite and wet lab.

Support rodent colony management, including weaning, breeding, and genotyping.

Perform tissue processing tasks such as cryosectioning.

Present experimental findings and progress updates during laboratory meetings.

Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory records and notebooks.

Support lab operations through ordering supplies and managing inventory and laboratory logs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
n- n
- Bachelor's Degree in Science, technology or related field and one year work related experience in the field of research of cardiovascular and renal complications of diabetes OR Equivalent combination of education/experience. n
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Must have a general understanding of the PIs' research field.

Experience with handling mice, and collecting samples from these animals.

Experience in genotyping and aiding in phenotyping in diabetic mice.

Experience with tissue dissection, tissue processing and embedding (fixed and frozen tissues), histological staining methods.

Experience with data collection, recording, organizing and analyzing data.

- Image analysis using computer programs such as ImagePro, Adobe Elements, and ImageJ. n
