Per Diem Nursing Assistant - Inpatient Float Pool

The UNC Float/Flex Pool is actively seeking dedicated Nursing Assistants (Per Diem) to enhance our dynamic team. This exciting opportunity allows you to float to various facilities, including the Medical Center in Chapel Hill and the Hospital at Hillsborough in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

To qualify, you must commit to a minimum of 36 hours over a 6-week scheduling period with preferred scheduling. Flexible shift options are available, including 4, 8, 10, or 12 hours, with the requirement of two weekend shifts and at least one 12-hour or two 8-hour night shifts in each scheduling period.

Mandatory Orientation: Applicants must be able to attend a required week-long hospital orientation, which is held every two weeks. The orientation schedule includes Monday & Tuesday virtual sessions with a mandatory WebEx at 10 AM, followed by in-person training on Wednesday from 1 PM to 5 PM.

The UNC Float/Flex Pool comprises approximately 300 RNs and NAs/CSTs. You will have the opportunity to float across all 75 units of the main campus (excluding the OR and NCCC) and the Hillsborough campus, thereby providing crucial support during staffing shortages. In this role, you will function as a Nursing Assistant I, delivering hands-on patient care across various departments, from the emergency department to critical care, and serving patients of all ages from infants to geriatrics. Your responsibilities include both direct and indirect care under the direct supervision of registered nurses or physicians.

This position also qualifies for the Inpatient Flex Commitment Incentive, providing a one-time payment of $1,200 after completing six months of work with the Float Pool in good standing.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assist healthcare providers with routine examinations and procedures; procure necessary supplies during emergencies.
2. In psychiatric settings, support patients through reality orientation, behavior modification plans, and provide therapeutic interactions to meet emotional and safety needs.
3. Observe, document, and promptly report significant patient condition changes to a registered nurse or physician.
4. Guide patients and their families during admission and discharge processes, ensuring ease of transition.
5. Perform patient care according to established plans, including vital sign measurements, wound care, range of motion exercises, and daily living activities.
6. Carry out indirect care duties, including cleaning, restocking, and clerical tasks as needed.
7. Reinforce teaching provided by RNs or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions.

Education Requirements: No specific educational requirements, provided all other position qualifications are met.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Must be listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and hold Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Professional Experience Requirements: A minimum of six months of nursing assistant experience is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Fluent in verbal and written English and capable of developing basic computer skills.
