The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County in its mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness, and Excellence in all aspects of their work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The OPS Health Educator Consultant is a professional position with various responsibilities under the Community Health Division, specifically for the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program for Manatee County. We seek an enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with community members and providing them with health education and resources. This position has the working title of Tobacco Prevention Specialist. This is a fast-paced environment that requires flexibility and adaptability. This individual will initiate and coordinate tobacco prevention and control activities. The policy areas within the grant are Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing, Cessation Access, K-12, Tobacco Free Public Spaces, Tobacco Partnership, SWAT, and Point of Sale. The main policy areas for this role will include Cessation Access and Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing.
Other responsibilities include developing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and coordinating activities and local partners associated with public health programs and initiatives. Duties include participating in internal councils, committees, and workgroups, special projects, attending health-related events and school activities, participating in local public health initiatives, and developing health education communication materials. Create and distribute educational outreach materials and deliver training as needed and applicable to policy areas. Plans, prioritizes, organizes, coordinates, and conducts work to meet all established deliverables. Promotes a tobacco-free lifestyle in the community.
Attends scheduled training as required. Represents the Health Department at community events and functions. Attends required team meetings, trainings, and in-service programs for job competency; maintains computer competency necessary for job performance; performs other duties as assigned.

This position requires occasional travel, and activities may occur before, during, or after scheduled working hours and/or on weekends or holidays. A background check will be required. Must have a valid Driver's License.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill in effective communication in written, oral, and electronic formats.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Ability to interact with the public in a tactful, courteous, and effective manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to work with multiple disciplines and a variety of community partners
  • Ability to prepare and develop publications and reports as requested
  • Ability to communicate effectively, attend meetings, and assist with coordination and reporting of special events
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in public health, health education, health science, or another related field required.
  • Preferred - At least one to three years' experience in promoting health.

  • Emergency Duty : Incumbent may be required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
