The University of New Mexico seeks applications for an Open Rank Assistant or Associate Professor in the History of Native America with an anticipated start date of August 2026. The University of New Mexico (UNM), located in Albuquerque, is New Mexico's flagship institution. It is a "very high activity" Carnegie Research University, a Minority-serving institution, and a Hispanic-serving institution. The History Department features strong interconnected teaching and graduate programs on the U.S. West, United States, and Latin America. UNM is also a member of the Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies (NCAIS). We seek a scholar who demonstrates a commitment to historical research on Native America, period and region open, who can offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Native American history, and who is prepared to take an active role in mentoring PhD and master's students in a graduate program with a long tradition of training scholars in the field. Duties include teaching various courses in the program per semester. The successful candidate will hold the PhD in History or a related discipline with significant training in Native American history. The degree must be awarded by the date of appointment. The candidate will demonstrate the qualifications summarized below:
