Join our dedicated team as a Nursing Assistant I (Per Diem) in the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at UNC Hospitals Youth Behavioral Health Facility (YBH). We are looking for compassionate individuals who are passionate about working with adolescents in a behavioral health environment.

1 YBH is a specialized 14-bed inpatient unit focused on providing acute psychiatric stabilization to adolescents aged 12 to 15. Our mission is to stabilize crises, engage community supports, and plan for further care as needed. We offer comprehensive psychiatric stabilization through evaluation, monitoring, medication treatment, family engagement, and therapy management. Our goal is to instill skills in patients to prevent future crises and facilitate safe discharge and aftercare planning with community providers.

UNC Hospitals Youth Behavioral Health is a dynamic 54-bed inpatient psychiatric facility designed for children and adolescents with various mental health diagnoses, including Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our multidisciplinary team consists of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Nursing Services, Pharmacy, Pastoral Care, and Nutrition Services, all working within a trauma-informed care framework emphasizing safety, positive coping skills, and therapeutic activities.

This Per Diem position requires flexibility to work approximately 12 hours every two weeks with rotating day and night shifts, generally from 7am-7:30pm & 7pm-7:30am, including weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assist healthcare providers during examinations and procedures, ensuring all equipment and supplies are ready.
2. Support patients in reality orientation, participate in behavior modification plans, provide therapeutic support, and de-escalate aggressive situations as needed.
3. Observe and document patient information while promptly notifying a registered nurse or physician of significant changes.
4. Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
5. Deliver patient care as outlined in care plans, including vital signs measurement, wound care, and mobility assistance.
6. Perform indirect care tasks such as maintaining a clean work area, restocking supplies, and assisting with clerical duties.
7. Reinforce patient education provided by nurses or physicians and document patient understanding.

Requirements:

• High School diploma or GED
• Certification as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• At least six months of relevant nursing assistant experience.
• Fluency in verbal and written English and basic computer skills.
