Nursing Assistant I (Per Diem) - Inpatient Float Pool Position

The UNC Float/Flex Pool is looking for dedicated Nursing Assistants (Per Diem) to become part of our dynamic team. This role involves floating between the Medical Center in Chapel Hill and the Hospital at Hillsborough in North Carolina.

Applicants must be available to work a minimum of 36 hours within a 6-week scheduling period. Preferred scheduling is available, and shifts may range from 4, 8, 10, or 12 hours. There is a requirement of 2 weekend shifts as well as at least 1 12-hour or 2 8-hour night shifts during each scheduling period.

To succeed in this role, you must be able to attend a weeklong orientation offered every two weeks. The orientation schedule includes:

• Monday & Tuesday: Virtual with a mandatory WebEx at 10am
• Wednesday: 8am to 10am virtual and mandatory in-person from 1pm to 5pm

The UNC Float/Flex Pool comprises approximately 300 RNs and NAs/CSTs. We support all 75 units at the main campus (excluding the OR and NCCC) and the Hillsborough campus by providing essential staffing during critical times. As a Nursing Assistant in this position, you will provide one-on-one care as a Personal Nurse Assistant while floating across various units in the hospital. You should have a flexible attitude and a desire to care for patients of all ages, from infants to geriatrics, across all service areas, including emergency and critical care.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assist healthcare providers with routine exams and procedures, ensuring timely procurement of necessary equipment and supplies during emergencies.
2. In the psychiatric setting, support patient behavior plans, provide informal therapy, facilitate appropriate play for children, and monitor activities to ensure emotional and safety needs are met.
3. Observe and document patient information, reporting significant changes in conditions to a registered nurse or physician.
4. Assist patients and their families during admissions, orientation to the hospital experience, and discharge processes.
5. Provide care as outlined in the patient’s plan, including measuring vital signs, specimen collection, basic wound care, and assisting with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding.
6. Perform indirect care tasks like cleaning work areas, changing linens, and stocking supplies.
7. Reinforce teaching provided by nurses or physicians and document patient understanding.

This position qualifies for the Inpatient Flex Commitment Incentive, offering a lump sum of $1,200 upon completing six months of service in good standing.

Education Requirements: None required, provided other position qualifications are met.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Must be listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and possess Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Experience: Six months of nursing assistant experience.

Skills Required: Fluency in verbal and written English, with basic computer skills.
