Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Nuclear Medicine physicians and Nuclear Medicine Manager, performs theragnostic and Y-90 procedures using diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides. Responsible for performing all types of PET imaging, providing appropriate patient care for the exams, and administering radiopharmaceuticals specific for PET imaging.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of time)

Essential Functions: The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

1. Performs all Nuclear Medicine procedures and required QA and QC tests. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) 60%

Criteria

A. Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action.

B. Responds to changes in workload using time to departmental advantage and conducts job duties in accordance with departmental standards.

C. Communicates technical information in a manner appropriate for the intended person (patient, coworker etc.) and reports any problems which may affect the outcome of a patient exam.

D. Mixes, assays, records and injects various radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis and/or treatment of disease, with the aid of gamma cameras, computers, processors, dose calibrators, ventilation units, cardiac stress and monitoring equipment, and radiation survey meters.

E. Maintains all receipt, dispensation, storage and disposal records as required by NRC, Joint Commission, and the State of Missouri.

F. Assists in or performs “Hot Lab” duties: calibrations, assays, surveys, wipe tests, mixing, deluting, etc. and documenting all as required by the NRC, Joint Commission, and State Regulatory Agency.

G. Orders radiopharmaceuticals,kits or other supplies.

H. Accepts responsibility and reports for standby call procedures as scheduled; response must be within 1 hour.

I. Assists the Clinical Instructor in supervising and instructing Nuclear Medicine Students in all areas of Nuclear Medicine practice.

J. Demonstrate ability to relate to coworkers in a professional and respectful manner, in order to assure and promote a culture of safety.

2. Observes established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. (2, 3, 5, 6) 5% 

Criteria

A. Demonstrates attitude of cooperation and professionalism when working in any area of the facility.

B. Notifies supervisor when quality issues arise.

C. Uses protective equipment as needed.

3. Uses Hospital/Nuclear Medicine Information system according  to policy.  (2, 3, 4, 5) 5%

Criteria

A. Enters information correctly and in a timely manner

B. Recognizes and reports computer malfunctions.

C. Provides training and direction to co-workers as necessary.

D. Follows HIPAA guidelines regarding access to and release of information.

4. Participates in continuing education. (2, 3) 5%

Criteria

A. Attends required orientation.

B. Obtains 24 continuing education points every two years per ARRT Regulations.

C. Maintains BCLS certification.   

5. Attends meetings as required. (2, 3) 5%

Criteria

A. Attends staff meetings or reviews the minutes of the monthly meeting and signs off on in-service form.

B. Attends scheduled mandatory hospital meetings as requested by supervisor.     

6. Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies.   (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) 5%

A. Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.

B. Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employeesin accordance with hospital standards.

G. Works with other departments to provide services.

8. Quality Improvement (QI):  Incorporates Quality Assessment and one’s daily work.  (2, 5) 5%

Criteria

A. Wisely and responsibly utilize the resources within the facility.

B. Takes care of equipment and report problems to result in a longer usage life.

C. Recommends changes in practices to increase efficiency and minimizes waste to supervisors.                           

D. Reviews departmental PI, OA and QC monthly during departmental meetings and by reviewing posted information.

E. Provides data to Radiology Coordinator for monthly Performance Improvement on a daily basis.

9. Age Appropriate Care:  Provides age-appropriate care to:

A. Demonstrates knowledge and skills of normal growth and development necessary to provide services to the age of the patient served by the department.

C. Utilizes communication skills necessary to interpret age specific response.

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Graduate of approved program in Nuclear Medicine Technology

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Two years preferred

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION: Certification preferred and registry eligible required. Technologist must be certified within 12 months employment. Registered with the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board and/or the

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (N). BLS

WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to blood and body fluid. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other biological hazards subject to varying or unpredictable situations

occasionally subjected to irregular hours, subject to stressful situations. Deals directly with ionizing radiation with possible unknown exposure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to stand for and walk for long periods of time

Ability to lift, push, and pull 100 plus pounds. Ability to move or transfer patients

Ability to deal with strenuous and physical activity daily in lifting, pulling, pushing, patients, radiographic equipment cassettes and/or supplies.
