Motorsports Senior Performance Engineer

Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

GM Motorsports is looking to expand our motorsports group with individuals possessing a passion for vehicle dynamics and a drive to succeed on the racetrack. GM Motorsports is currently racing in NASCAR, IndyCar, WEC, IMSA and Formula 1. GM Motorsports has recently opened the Charlotte Technical Center to support all GM Motorsports Series from a single location to foster innovation and complex problem solving in a diverse, collaborative, and competitive environment.

What You'll Do

Collaborate with GM supported teams, GM engineering groups and GM personnel to:

  Understand analysis areas to target for greatest benefit.

• n

  Answer open questions across all GM Motorsports groups, building group knowledge.

• n

  Brainstorm new ways of achieving greater performance in targeted areas.

• n

  Train others developing understanding of underlying models and knowledge. to execute regular analysis and reporting tasks.

  n

• n

  Relay newest findings, current areas of development, and updates in tools and procedures to all relevant groups, internal and external.

Continuously strive to improve GM Motorsports programs' analysis methods and vehicle dynamics understanding by:

  Reimagining new and better solutions to common problems or questions.

• n

  Prototyping new ideas and validating these against track and test data.

  n
n
• n

  Working with GM Software team to implement solutions in our production tools.

  n
n
• n

  Push the boundaries of the current tool chain with a focus on a better understanding of the race vehicle, limits of the current toolsI, and opportunity to improve tools and techniques.

  Collaborate with GM core engineering and race series specific groups

  n
n
• n

  Conceptual studies to guide big-picture development efforts.

  n

• n

  Explore the limits of latest simulation and analysis tools, determine best use, and implement techniques to improve on track performance.

  Clearly present findings, recommendations, and analysis results through well organized and actionable reports and in-person follow-up.

What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related subject.

  7+ years of experience in a top-level motorsports series including NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC, or similar.

  n

• n

  Intimate knowledge of simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization including both offline simulation and the DIL simulator. Experience using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance.

  Proficient programing in Python, MATLAB, C#, or similar language.

• n

  Extensive experience analyzing on-track performance through both application vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods.

  Strong organization skills, forward thinking mentality, and a superb attention to detail.

  Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with exceptional work ethic and integrity.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

• n

  Race Engineering experience with intimate knowledge of race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy.

  n

• n

  Proficiency in Motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec or similar.

  n
n
• n

  Experience in multibody modeling and simulation using Dymola/Modelica, ADAMS, or similar.

  n
n
• n

  Knowledge and experience in tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation.

  n
n
• n

  Experience with aerodynamic testing and applying physical and/or CFD results to vehicle modeling tools for on-track performance optimization.

• n

  Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction from on-track testing, SPMM, and 7-post.
