Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Center Nurse Executive, Infection Preventionist, or Designee, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides safe, efficient, and compassionate nursing care to patients and residents, promoting positive clinical outcomes and high levels of satisfaction among patients and families. The CNA functions within the standards of practice defined by state certification and assists nursing staff by providing direct personal care and essential non-professional services to support comfort, dignity, and well-being.

In states where permitted, the CNA may also be responsible for specimen collection for Point-of-Care (POC) testing in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

• Provides care conducive to patient safety and comfort, including Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

• Obtains and records vital signs and weights per facility policy.

• Assists patients with ambulation, transfers, and positioning.

• Ensures proper use of adaptive equipment and maintains correct body alignment.

• Cares for patients' personal belongings and ensures cleanliness of their area.

• Assists licensed staff and physicians with treatments and procedures as needed.

• Makes occupied and unoccupied beds.

• Transports and accompanies patients to therapy, tests, or appointments as requested.

• Prepares patients for scheduled rehabilitation sessions.

• Reports missing patient identification promptly.

• Feeds or assists patients with meals and records intake and output accurately.

• Uses Point Click Care (PCC – POC) per clinical system processes to record care activities.

• Documents all patient care tasks accurately and promptly.

• Follows all infection control and prevention protocols per company policy.

• Maintains a clean and sanitary environment.

• Reports safety hazards, incidents, or concerns immediately to supervisors.

• Participates in care planning and implements care according to individualized plans.

• Reports any changes in patient condition or family concerns to the charge nurse or supervisor.

• Assists with patient admissions, discharges, and postmortem care.

• Collaborates with all departments to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care.

• Contributes to a respectful, team-oriented environment focused on quality and compassion.

• Collects, bags, and delivers soiled linen; retrieves clean linen and supplies.

• Cleans and sanitizes patient equipment and work areas as assigned.

• Maintains proper organization of nursing units, utility rooms, and kitchens.

• Participates in the orientation of new CNAs and attends required training programs.

• Maintains confidentiality of all Protected Health Information (PHI).

• Promotes a culture of safety, quality improvement, and continuous learning.

• Adheres to all applicable laws and ethical standards, including HIPAA, the Federal False Claims Act, and the Compliance and Ethics Program.

• Remains available to work beyond scheduled shifts as needed to meet patient or staffing demands.

Certified Nursing Assistant Specimen Collector (In States Where Permitted):

• Collects nasal specimens for Point-of-Care (POC) testing following established procedures.

• Maintains specimen integrity through adherence to infection control practices.

• Utilizes appropriate PPE, including respirators (N95/KN95), gloves, gowns, and face shields.

• Labels and documents specimens accurately.

• Completes training, education, and competency assessments for specimen collection.

• Reports equipment malfunctions or incidents during specimen collection.

• Performs specimen processing and analysis per state and federal guidelines.

Selection Criteria / Qualification Considerations:

Candidates must meet at least one of the following:

• Completed or currently enrolled in a CNA Career Ladder Program.

• Prior experience as a Lab Technician.

• Currently enrolled in nursing school.

• Experience as a Designated Infection Preventionist (IP) conducting IC rounds.

• Recommendations from CNA or Licensed Nurse.

• Certified Medication Technician (Med Tech) – within state scope.

• Certified Medication Aide (Med Aide) – within state scope.

• Must be fit-tested and able to wear N95/KN95 respirators.

Educational / Vocational Requirements:

1. Successful completion of a state-approved CNA program.

2. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

3. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

4. Verification of a current Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) as required by state law.

5. Basic computer skills or willingness to learn facility systems.

6. Completion of a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually.

7. Compliance with all legal, ethical, and organizational standards, including HIPAA and the Code of Conduct.

8. Active participation in orientation, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
