Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Lab Technician to operate, prepare, and control seed and production fermenters. You will follow SOPs, conduct manual manipulation of valves, and perform sterilization checks on fermenters. The role requires entering fermenters for cleaning and sanitization, monitoring levels, and applying basic microbiology techniques, including aseptic techniques.

Responsibilities

• Operate and control seed and production fermenters.

• Follow SOPs and manually manipulate valves on fermenters.

• Conduct sterilization checks and enter fermenters for cleaning and sanitization.

• Monitor levels on all fermenters and apply basic microbiology techniques.

• Utilize lab equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, pumps, and scales.

• Prepare media and clean glassware.

• Complete downstream processing of bacterial cultures.

• Take a lead role in the production area and communicate progress to the supervisor.

• Monitor daily activity in the department.

• Train and mentor employees on responsibilities and technical abilities.

• Clean biological production areas and assist where needed.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in biology, microbiology, and aseptic techniques.

• Experience with fermentation and fermenters.

• Ability to use lab equipment including microscopes and centrifuges.

• Strong multitasking abilities and ability to work independently.

• Demonstrated leadership skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Animal Science, Biomedical Science, or Biotechnology.

• 1-5+ years of experience in a laboratory environment.

• Experience with fermenters, bioreactors, or other biotechnology is highly desired.

Work Environment

The position is scheduled from Monday to Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM, with a 9-month contract-to-hire arrangement. Weekend work rotation may require 2–4 hours on Saturday/Sunday due to the production schedule. The work involves supporting the fermentation of bacterial cultures for cattle vaccines, primarily targeting Leptospira, in a science-driven, production-style environment with exposure to chemicals and media prep. You will work in a small team of 3 technicians and be provided with sterile gowns/scrubs. The incubator area maintains a temperature of approximately 80°F. Cleaning fermenters is required 3 times a week, and comfort with hands-on fermentation work is essential. Physical requirements include lifting/pushing/pulling up to 80 lbs, prolonged standing, crouching, and manual dexterity. PPE such as hair, eye, and foot protection, as well as a respirator, is required.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.50 - $25.00/hr.
