Laboratory Technician
Perform basic laboratory functions including specimen processing, customer service, and data entry procedures in support of the hospital's mission of patient care. Collect, process, store and transport blood, body fluids and tissue specimens. Perform clerical functions such as faxing, copying and mailing of reports and answering the phones professionally.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: For West Virginia Labs: 1. High School Diploma or Equivalent. 2. West Virginia Point of Care Technician (PoC) License within 90 days of hire, as applicable per physical work location assignment. For Ohio and Maryland Labs: 1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: 1. Phlebotomy Certification (CPT). Experience: 1. Six (6) months of Phlebotomy, Lab Assistant or Cytopreparatory experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare specimens in order to perform basic diagnostic procedures designed to contribute to accurate reproducible patient results. 2. Operate laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing consistent with standard operating procedures. 3. Prepare reagents and solutions required to complete specimen processing and testing according to the standard operating procedures. 4. Perform quality control procedures under direct supervision to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation. 5. Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation. 6. Report test results with limited errors and in a timely manner. 7. Utilize time, materials, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency. 8. Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting organization of work according to test ordering status. 9. Communicate any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor/Manager. 10. Communicate any unusual medical/technical problems or unusual patient results. 11. Perform clerical duties as needed to support laboratory operations.

Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs. 2. Skills and Abilities
1. Able to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse and calculator. 2. Able to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word and Excel). 3. Able to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
Additional Job Description: The successful candidate will work primarily in a laboratory setting, performing a variety of essential support functions to assist in the daily operations of the Histology laboratory. Responsibilities include restocking supplies, preparing the processing and embedding areas for the following day, organizing and distributing patient slides to pathologists, and conducting routine instrument maintenance. The technician will also be responsible for filing blocks and slides, scanning slides for Digital Pathology, and participating in Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities. Routine handling of biohazardous and chemical hazardous materials is required, with strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
Additional duties include retrieving batches of tissue cassettes from the Gross Room and loading them onto tissue processors. The candidate must follow all departmental standard operating procedures and policies to ensure consistency and compliance. Strong visual acuity is essential for distinguishing small print and numbers on slides and cassettes. Other ancillary tasks may be assigned as needed to support laboratory operations.
A background in medical terminology, biology, anatomy, or chemistry is preferred, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. This role is ideal for individuals who are organized, dependable, and committed to maintaining high standards in laboratory practice.
