Position Summary
We are seeking a talented co-op student to join the Drug Discovery Analytical team within the Leads Discovery and Optimization department. The candidate will be exposed to the exciting and fast paced world of drug discovery research and be able to learn new techniques and skills from industry experts. The candidate will work with colleagues across different disciplines to help lead a new initiative to implement and validate novel sample preparations for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) based metabolomics methodologies. The co-op will also have the opportunity to learn about other applications of NMR, analytical chemistry and metabolomics as time and interest allows.
Metabolomics is a comprehensive study of endogenous metabolites in biological specimens and has provided insights to a variety of biological questions, including the differences at a molecular level between diseased and healthy groups. This co-op position will focus on implementing stable isotope tagging derivatization and analysis approaches to continue evolving our metabolomics platform at Bristol Myers Squibb.
The full-time internship will take place July - December 2026. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, monitor, and quantitate metabolite tagging reactions and build an NMR reference library of stable isotope-labeled metabolites.
- Develop an automated workflow using TECAN automated liquid handler.
- Collect data on high-field NMR spectrometers and learn how to analyze spectra using standard analysis packages such as AMIX/ChenomX/ACD labs.
- Maintain an up-to-date laboratory notebook, perform literature searches, and prepare written reports and oral presentations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Currently enrolled in a full time B.S. degree program with 2+ years of completed coursework in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline and be available for 6 month duration July to December 2026.
- Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in analytical chemistry, NMR spectroscopy, or systems biology.
- Lab-based experience through coursework or independent research as well as training in wet lab techniques such as accurate weighing, pipetting, and lab notebook recording is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Willing to work both independently and cooperatively within a multi-functional, team-oriented environment.
- This is a site-essential lab based role and 100% on-site attendance is expected.
- All candidates must be authorized to work in the US both at the time of hire and for the duration of their employment. Please note that immigration or visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
This is a temporary, time-bound position intended for the duration of the internship or co-op program. Employment in this role does not imply or guarantee ongoing or permanent employment with BMS.
The starting hourly compensation for this assignment is within the range of $27.00 to $29.00/hr. Please note that the final individual compensation and any applicable benefits will be determined by your employer of record (and not BMS). Factors influencing this decision may include the characteristics of the assignment, such as demonstrated experience, required skill, and the geographic location of the job.
