Electric Distribution Systems Designer

Description

Leidos is seeking an Electric Distribution Systems Designer to develop construction work packages for electric distribution systems. This role involves using various software systems and construction standards in environments such as overhead (OH), underground (UG), or underground residential distribution (URD).

As a successful candidate, you will be involved in constructing work packages for projects related to joint use make ready and street light installations. You will utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, Work Management Systems (WMS), and other client systems to ensure effective project outcomes. Your work will include performing engineering calculations for structural analysis, cable pulling, electric demand, and fault currents, while coordinating protective devices.

Other responsibilities will involve preparing forestry trimming requests, facilitating permit and Right-of-Way acquisitions, developing bills of materials, estimating costs, and serving as an advocate for customers, which includes acquiring easements and calculating customer Contributions in Aid of Construction (CIAC).

Responsibilities:

• Develop designs and construction work packages for electrical distribution systems (operating from 4kV through 138kV), mainly focused on managing overloaded transformers, inspections, maintenance, and joint use projects.
• Ensure compliance with quality control measures and workplace safety practices while adhering to project scope, schedule, and budget.
• Conduct field assessments of pole locations, recording detailed observations of existing conditions. Fielding equipment will be provided, and mileage will be reimbursed.

Required Education & Experience:

• A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, though additional relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
• Experience working with a utility in a design capacity.
• Willingness to work in the field approximately half of the work week.
• Familiarity with Pole Loading software like O-Calc, SPIDA Calc, Pole Foreman, and SAP.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with clients and project teams.
• Experience in distribution design projects, including medium voltage switchgear, voltage conversion projects, and distribution automation projects.
• Experience developing civil and electrical packages for complex cable/conduit systems in urban environments.

Preferred Experience:

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, PLS-CADD, MicroStation, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus.
