Division Chief, Critical Care Medicine-Associate or Professor of Clinical Pediatrics-CHLA

The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) are actively seeking a full-time board-certified physician leader for the position of Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine at CHLA. The academic rank of the successful candidate will be as an Associate or Full Professor of Pediatrics, dependent on individual experience.

CHLA is one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers devoted to children with a focus on exceptional care, research, and education. The Division Chief will lead a team of 25 intensivists and participate in collaborative clinical and research activities across the departments of Pediatrics and ACCM.

Position Description

We are seeking an accomplished clinician-scientist to lead and cultivate the academic development and productivity of the Division of Critical Care Medicine. The Chief will be responsible for leading a team of 25 intensivists and will collaborate with the medical directors of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU). The position includes supporting the academic success and professional development of faculty and fellows.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and strategic direction to a dedicated team of critical care medicine professionals.
• Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver high-quality clinical services to patients and families.
• Create a positive work environment and mentor physicians and trainees to promote professionalism and effective communication.
• Build partnerships with other division leaders to advance clinical activities.
• Demonstrate expertise in critical care medicine and understanding of evolving healthcare forces to inform practice.
• Identify and champion opportunities for growth in clinical, research, and educational programs.
• Lead growth plans, monitor progress, and participate in departmental budgeting and financial planning.
• Oversee educational activities for critical care medicine and develop cooperative research programs with departmental research services.
• Lead quality assurance and performance improvement activities in partnership with QA/QI teams.
• Deliver academic and performance evaluations for division faculty and lead recruitment and promotions.
• Ensure high-quality clinical care that meets departmental standards and regulatory requirements.

Candidate Attributes

The ideal candidate will be a pediatric intensivist with a strong clinical research record and a proven track record in mentoring faculty. They should demonstrate the ability to inspire, communicate professionally, lead high-performing teams, and engage in strategic thinking and decision-making.

Requirements

• Board certification in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine; Primary board certification in Critical Care Medicine (with Anesthesiology training).
• Experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of Pediatric Critical Care experience, preferably at a large, complex academic children's hospital or academic medical center, ideally in a diverse, urban and highly regulated market with a high Medicaid-insured patient population.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership role within an academic Division or Department or in enterprise positions within their home hospital or health system.
  • Track record leading cost management initiatives and budget management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development, mentoring, and coaching of faculty and team members, with experience guiding faculty in professional development.
• Licensure
  • Must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the State of California.

The annual base salary range for this position is $326,000–$400,000. USC considers factors such as scope, responsibilities, experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and market considerations when extending an offer.
