This job performs microscopic screening and diagnosis of gynecological and miscellaneous specimens. Assists in collection and preparation of fine needle aspiration specimens; performs ancillary prep, clerical and quality control duties when needed; enters negative gynecological results into computer; participates in on-site cytology and other continuing education opportunities.

Education 

Required - Bachelor's degree

Graduation from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation accredited school of cytotechnologist or other organization approved by Health and Human Services or Certified in cytotechnologist by a certification agency approved by HHS (e.g., American Society of Clinical Pathologists).

Work Experience

Required - None.

Certifications

Required - C.T. (ASCP) registered.
Louisiana CYT license or eligible.      

Job Duties

• Identifies when and how to troubleshoot staining or preparation problems before specimen goes for final review.
• Assesses appropriateness/correlation of screening results prior to reporting.  
• Identifies, interprets and resolves quality control problems.
• Remains available as a resource to Lab Assistants and the clerical personnel and other laboratory personnel for questions and problem resolution.
• Completes Quality Control Pap screening on a timely basis, remaining sensitive to turn around time issues.
• Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
• Other related duties as required.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.
