Custodian

Custodians are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the facilities and grounds on campus. They are expected to perform a variety of tasks to ensure that the environment is welcoming and safe for all.

Responsibilities:

• Clean floors, ramps, and stairs by sweeping, wet mopping, dust mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
• Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
• Gather and empty recycling and trash.
• Clean and polish fixtures.
• Replace light bulbs.
• Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using appropriate cleaning agents.
• Mix cleaning solutions according to specifications.
• Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
• Steam clean or shampoo carpets.
• Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
• Clean, replace, and hang blinds, drapes, and entrance mats.
• Collect and deliver soiled items.
• Clear sidewalks, drives, and adjacent areas, including snow removal.
• Lock, unlock, and secure buildings, maintaining awareness of the facilities.
• Identify and report needed building repairs.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Skills:

• 6 months to 1 year of custodial or janitorial experience.
• Ability to stand and walk for the duration of the shift.
• Capability to bend and squat to reach difficult areas.
• Ability to lift and pull up to 50 lbs.
• Capacity to perform medium to heavy physical effort.
• Customer service mindset and interpersonal skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• Commercial or industrial cleaning experience is a plus.
• Leadership or supervisory experience in a custodial or janitorial role is a plus.
• Ability to operate cleaning vehicles such as scrubbers is advantageous.

Work Environment:

Custodians work in various zones across the campus, primarily in administrative buildings, but may also assist in dorms, halls, and athletic facilities. The role requires adaptability to management requests and a willingness to tackle a variety of cleaning tasks. The work is physically demanding and fast-paced, requiring standing and moving across zones throughout the shift. Custodians are not expected to handle dangerous or harmful materials.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $15.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
