Assistant Director, Programs
The Assistant Director manages the marketing and branding of the Center for Multicultural Affairs in addition to providing programs and services in the areas of community engagement, multicultural education, social justice education, and leadership development. They collaborate with Student Affairs units and academic departments when appropriate.
The Assistant Director also advises student organizations and acts as a liaison between the Center for Multicultural Affairs and various university administrative offices and academic departments as well as the Durham community and professional organizations. Campus and community associations empower the Assistant Director to develop and apply the latest knowledge and research in education and training.
Key Position Duties:
Marketing and Communications (30%)
- Manage overall marketing and branding of the CMA including developing the Center's marketing plan
- Design and manages CMA digital, print, and promotional materials.
- Work with Student Affairs Director of Communications regarding CMA's messaging and websites.
- Coordinate CMA social media presence, website, listserv maintenance, and weekly newsletter.
- Manage the marketing and design team (1 graduate assistant, 3 undergraduate student staff)
- Serve on the Division of Student Affairs' Collaborative Learning and Communications Team
- Conduct marketing assessment as needed to evaluate CMA outreach.
Programming (25%)
- Co-advises Common Ground with the CMA Associate Director and student leaders by providing consultation regarding the retreat curriculum, facilitators' training, and continuing post-retreat support for participants; attends the retreats to provide oversight and administrative support to Common Ground student directors.
- Develop and implement annual programming and other traditional programs
- Plan and implement major programs including graduation and award ceremonies, orientation events, and provide support for heritage months.
- Design and implement CMA.
Outreach/Consultation/Advising (30%)
- Advise cultural groups affiliated with CMA.
- Provide consultation on an individual basis and on-going advocacy for student communities to ensure the quality of their academic, social and personal experiences.
- Provide consultation to student organizations coordinating programs related to social justice and multicultural education.
- Support alumni affinity groups in collaboration with Duke Alumni Association.
- Serve on recruiting and interviewing committees within the University as time allows.
- Serve on various university committees on behalf of CMA.
Professional Development (15%)
- Supervise graduate/professional student and undergraduate staff
- Participate in campus, divisional, state, regional, and national professional training opportunities:
- Keep abreast of latest knowledge and research in multicultural education, community engagement, and leadership development.
- Attend training and conducts presentations at regional and national professional organizations.
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
- Work generally requires two years experience in personnel, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Preferred Experience:
- One year of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional, or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.
Preferred Skills and Competencies:
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
- High level planning and organizational skills
- Computer literacy, including familiarity with social media.
- Expertise in delivering program and education services to diverse population
