Job Summary:
The Vessel Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all activities related to the safe and efficient operation of vessels within the port or terminal. This role involves managing vessel scheduling, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, optimizing vessel turnaround times, supervising operational staff, and liaising with various stakeholders, including vessel crews, terminal staff, and port authorities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Vessel Scheduling & Coordination:
o Manage vessel berthing schedules to ensure efficient port utilization.
o Coordinate with port agents, shipping companies, and terminal operators to ensure smooth vessel arrivals and departures.
o Monitor real-time vessel movements and adjust schedules as needed to prevent delays.
2. Operational Supervision:
o Supervise daily vessel operations, including loading, unloading, and cargo handling activities.
o Ensure the safe and efficient execution of operations in line with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies.
o Monitor operational staff to ensure tasks are performed according to safety protocols, operational procedures, and best practices.
o Oversee the preparation and maintenance of operational reports and logs.
3. Compliance & Safety:
o Ensure all vessel operations comply with local, national, and international maritime laws and regulations.
o Implement and enforce safety protocols for vessel operations, ensuring staff and vessel safety during all phases of port activity.
o Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions where necessary.
4. Liaison & Communication:
o Serve as the primary point of contact between vessel crews, port authorities, shipping lines, and terminal personnel.
o Communicate operational issues and delays to relevant stakeholders promptly.
o Ensure all stakeholders are kept informed of vessel schedules, operational updates, and changes.
5. Performance Monitoring:
o Track and analyze vessel turnaround times and productivity metrics.
o Identify areas for improvement in operational processes and implement optimization strategies.
o Maintain records of vessel performance and work to reduce operational delays and inefficiencies.
6. Staff Management & Training:
o Supervise and provide leadership to operational staff, including dock workers, stevedores, and other relevant personnel.
o Ensure staff are adequately trained in operational procedures, safety protocols, and equipment use.
o Conduct performance reviews and provide guidance for staff development.
7. Equipment & Resource Management:
o Coordinate the use of port equipment (e.g., cranes, tugs, forklifts) for vessel operations.
o Ensure equipment is properly maintained and available for use as needed.
o Liaise with maintenance teams to schedule repairs and address equipment failures.
8. Emergency Response:
o Be prepared to manage emergency situations, such as vessel accidents or environmental spills, ensuring swift and effective response.
o Participate in emergency drills and safety briefings.
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Skills:
Education:
o Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field. Alternatively, a combination of relevant experience and certifications.
Preferred Experience:
o 5 years of experience in vessel operations or port management, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
Knowledge & Skills:
o In-depth knowledge of maritime operations, port procedures, and safety regulations.
o Familiarity with vessel scheduling software and terminal management systems.
o Strong leadership and team management skills.
o Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
o Ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
o Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
Certifications:
o Maritime certifications (e.g., STCW, ISPS) may be required.
o First aid and firefighting certifications are a plus.
Physical Requirements:
o Ability to work in an outdoor environment and manage varying weather conditions.
o Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (if applicable).
o Ability to navigate through operational areas, including the supervision of vessel operations on the dock.
