Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg position in a hospital setting, with Cerner or Epic experience and BLS/NIHSS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Work in a 492-bed hospital and Level II Trauma Center with multiple Med/Surg units including trauma surgical, neuroscience, ortho, oncology, and clinical decision units
• Assigned to a home unit on the first day of orientation; float to like Med/Surg units as required
• Patient populations include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizures), oncology, ortho, urology, and general medical patients
• Typical patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6, depending on unit and patient population
• Trauma surgical, neuroscience, oncology, ortho, and urology cases covered across various Med/Surg units
• EMR used is Cerner (preferred); Epic experience also considered
• Required to work 7a-7p or 7p-7a shifts, following a 4-week schedule cycle
• Every other weekend or four weekend days per month required
• No on-call responsibilities
• Primary responsibilities include assessments, medication administration, wound care, trach care, and interpreting telemetry strips every 4 hours
• Team support includes CNA (1:6), phlebotomy, IV team, hospitalist, and charge nurse coverage
• Travelers receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours unit preceptorship if new or returning after 1 year
• Must work one major and one minor holiday per schedule policy, with specific blackout dates for time off
• Scrub color is open to any color
• Parking available in designated parking deck levels
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply
• Candidates must live outside a 60-mile radius from the facility

Requirements

• Active AL or compact RN license
• Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience with Cerner or Epic EMR experience
• If ICU experience only, Cerner EMR experience is mandatory
• Current BLS and NIHSS certifications
• At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience for trauma surgical unit
• Telemetry interpretation skills required, with telemetry monitored by dedicated techs
• Required skills: wound care, chest tubes, IV start, NGT, trach care, medication administration, documentation, and escalation as appropriate
• Experienced with central lines, surgical site care, ostomy care, drains, colostomy care, foley, and PEG tubes as applicable to specific units
• No previous permanent employment within the last 6 months for returning travelers
