I. JOB SUMMARY
The surgical technologist, using the principles of medical asepsis, prepares the operating room for surgical cases of all specialties and instruments the surgical procedures anticipating the needs of the surgeon. The surgical technologist provides care within the MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice and the Operating Room Policies and Procedures.
II. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY
A. Reports to: Director of Surgical Services, Clinical Nurse Manager, Clinical Leaders, Registered Nurse
B. Supervises: none
C. Key Working Relationships: patients, surgeons, anesthesia, registered nurses, nurse aides, and central services staff
D. Primary Customer Groups: patients, physicians, anesthesia, inter- and intra-departmental staff

III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Assists the circulating nurse in assessing the patients physical, psychological, social, spiritual, environmental, and educational needs and helps to develop and implement the plan of care based on sound nursing principles, health center policy and patient/family needs. (Continuous Learner)
B. Provides care to all surgical patients in accordance with the operating room's performance standards, physician preference cards, and the AORN Standards of Care and Practice. (Adherence to Policy)
C. Assists in setting up rooms, secures safe transport of the patient if needed, confirms correctness of the surgical site, prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns the room around under the supervision of the circulating nurse. D. Serves as a steward for the hospital's human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager. Identifies accurate changes on surgeons preference cards. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies during the case and in the department. (Team Work, Adherence to Policy)
E. Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties (exception: heart, neuro have dedicated teams). Willing to share knowledge. Completes routine assignments in a timely manner. V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education:
1. Graduate of a surgical technologist program is required; or graduate of an LPN program with Surgical experience.
2. Certification as a surgical technologist preferred. LPN license required if graduate of LPN program.
B. Experience
1. Previous surgical technologist experience preferred.

Completes the following mandatory courses (check all that apply):
X Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.
X Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines
Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Motor Vehicle:
